2015 Mitsubishi Mirage ES (Garage entry) (2016-03-04 19:53:19)
Picked up my ES using Mitsubishi's big rebates. The fuel economy gauge registered 41 mpg toward the end of the ride home from the dealership - the TPMS light was on the whole time. I aired the tires up to clear the trouble light.
Looking forward to enjoying the premium fuel economy of this car. Thanks to everyone in this community for their insight.
:)
I'll get some pictures up soon!
Wohoo! Hard to say no with these rebates, eh?
I doubt Mitsubishi is still manufacturing the '15s, so what's available is likely just what's on the lots right now.
Get 'em while you can, folks!
In my area, there weren't many ESs left with manual transmission. I'm glad I got one.
It was nice to negotiate a deal. I went with Sunnyside primarily because their sales staff were very upfront with pricing. I had to negotiate with other dealers over the price using Sunnyside as my example. One other dealer would meet their price, but the process was frustrating.
In the end, it's all good. I got what I liked before someone else got it, and didn't overpay.
:)
Now I get to learn my new car. Thanks to this forum, I have a pretty good head start.
Congrats with your new Mirage!
But tell me.. Did the TMPS light up all the way? Are you sure that they not sold you wheels without the TPMS sensor in?
My winter tyres did not have the TPMS sensor in them, i first got to know it when i put them on, but i does not bother me i check the air in the tires almost each 14 days sometimes even more..
I added air to the tires when I got home and the TPMS light soon went off, so the sensors are working fine. Good to know.
I have followed the local dealer inventory for the past six months, and even took this car for a test drive last year. All this indicates it has simply sat on their lot for a long time and nobody checked the air pressure in the tires. Easy to fix.
Now I'll have to visit Laceygirl's garage page for ideas on modifications. :)
Thankfully my Mirage seemed to be tracking straight on the ride home. I asked for documentation of the alignment, but my salesman assured me everything has already been checked, and reminded me that all adjustments are covered for the first 12 months.
I still feel I need to have the alignment numbers documented. Can any Mitsubishi techs here give me some guidance on how to proceed?
Hi eggman,
Congrats! I didnt know you where looking to buy. Glad you scored a good deal.
Yes I am also aware of the alignment stuff so I am going to keep my eye on it and after about 9 months I will look into it and see (to make sure I am still covered by the 12 month warranty in case I need to file a claim)
Is it ALL the 2015 mirages that have a bad rear axle or just some?
Regarding the rear axle alignment, some, not all, are affected, from what I have read.
I had been waiting for a good opportunity to get one of these cars, and so far I'm glad I did.
We just went for a little shopping trip this afternoon. My fuel economy gauge reported 48 mpg when we got home.
Funny thing is, the fueleconomy.gov rates these cars near the top for greenhouse gas emissions, but a five out of ten for a smog rating, at least in Ohio.

Select the state of purchase to see what I mean.
I wonder why?
Congrats on the Mirage purchase! Glad you finally pulled the trigger on one. :)
As for the alignment, I would watch the local sales ads. There are inevitably places that offer free alignment checks for cars. Just wait for one and take it in once you find a coupon.
Great idea - thanks.
P.S.: I found National Tire & Battery offers free alignment checks.
Just did my first fill-up. Calculated fuel economy at 41.538 mpg. I'm not impressed! Much of the time commuting the Multi-Information Display would register 44 - 47 mpg in mostly city motoring. This afternoon I stopped at the garden center on my way home and the car reported 54.8 mpg in city traveling on 35 mph roads. I was looking forward to better numbers than 41.5 mpg. :(

I'll still look forward to improvements as the car wears in. Now I'm off to make my first fuel log entry.
Are you viewing only your "A" MPG gauge? Do you know about the "B" gauge which can track your MPG over a full tank (or whenever you decide to reset it)?
Found it! Here's the A and B display from my drive in to work this morning.http://mirageforum.com/forum/attachm...7&d=1458811488
http://mirageforum.com/forum/attachm...8&d=1458811488I'm hoping I can get my calculated fuel economy up close to these numbers.
Added fuel log entry. An improvement over the first tank, but not much. I'm somewhat pleased it's as good as it is as my driving is mostly suburban neighborhoods with little highway/freeway time. I look forward to a road trip if only to see it's fuel economy without all the stop & go.
Also added a bunch of photo albums. One of my favorites is Comparisons. I find it interesting to take photos of this Elusive Beast near other more pedestrian specimens.
Still mulling giving this machine a name. After all, it's not exactly sentient. I've been considering calling it Speck.
Also changed my avatar pic yesterday. I think the new one is funny.
Edit: it represents my renewed interest in small, efficient Mitsubishi products. Here's hoping this lasts longer than my last one! :)
I've photographed notable moments on my MID fuel economy display and put them in a forum photo album called Consumption. Feel free to visit this and my other photo albums. :)
These are from my morning commute in to work. I usually start somewhat early - 06:00, sometimes 05:00, so traffic is minimal and I can experiment with light acceleration without interfering much with other drivers.
I don't always start at the same site. The first few readings are on a route that has moderate elevation changes. The other route is mostly downhill, starting with a gentle grade with an approximately 100' hill about a half-mile from parking. Coming home at the end of the day I can readily see the difference in fuel economy going uphill. :)
In both of these routes, there are a fair number of stops necessary, both stop lights and stop signs. I imagine my numbers would be much improved if I didn't have to stop so much.
I thought I'd post my results here. Keeping track of the fuel consumption display has taught me that subtle changes can have a big impact on how much fuel this car needs to get me around.
Sorry the pictures are so big. I want to scale them down. I also have some photos that I need to rotate for proper orientation.

Morning commute.
OAT:52°
Speeds roughly 30-35 max. More intentional light acceleration. This car responds well to to light acceleration and rewards patience. :)

Morning commute, at the bottom of the hill when the mpgs were at their peak. Final result was an improvement over yesterday, so I'm still learning.

Now that's what I'm talking about. :) I got lucky with timing on lots of traffic lights.

Mind you, aside from inflating the stock tire pressure to 45psi, this car is in it's stock form. In addition, I am a novice when it comes to fuel efficiency, compared to others here. :) It'll be interesting to see if I can improve on this as outside air temperatures (OAT) warm up.
Also, this is only my third tank of gas. I suppose I have some improvement to look forward to as the drivetrain wears in. I'm also interested in seeing how the fuel economy turns out on this fill-up. I've been trying to note the difference between calculated consumption and what the B display reports.
Looking forward to adding more. Let me know if anyone thinks this should be it's own thread.
Gracias amigos!
Almost 80 MPG. That is NUTTY.
Also, I really wanted my sister to buy a blue one..lol. Oh well, shes paying for it.
Silver is kind of pedestrian, isn't it? There's silver cars everywhere these days. I'll look for her out on the roads. Let us know your experiences with Mentor Mitsubishi service.
Well, I made another fuel log entry and my numbers are improving. My calculated fuel economy was actually better than what my MID-B display reported. Sweet. I reset my trip odometers and the MID-B fuel economy as well for this new tank. I also increased the air pressure in my tires to 50 psi, from 45. When I pumped them up, they were all still at 45, so no noticeable loss of air pressure since I first aired them up.
Also, I made entries for Speck at FuelEconomy.gov for all to see.
fueleconomy.gov: Compare Side-by-Side: 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage 1.2 L, 3 cyl, Manual 5-spd
fueleconomy.gov: My MPG Estimates: 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage
It is interesting to note that the few users who have reported their fuel economy on this US EPA website are doing better than the EPA's own estimates. I hope other owners here can add their numbers to show that the Mirage fuel economy was not falsely reported here in the US.
What else - I am curious about the Rockford Fosgate equipment, but I'm not sure I want to spend the money on upgrading the audio - not sure if it's a.) worth it and b.) I'll even use it/appreciate it. Definitely thinking about WeatherTech floor mats.
What else - I need to schedule my first oil change and get the alignment checked. I think I should get a third-party alignment check before letting the dealer check, as I've seen some dealer alignment reports that look suspiciously good.
Funny thing about this car - it has lots of nifty features that I found curious when I was thinking about getting one. Now that I own one, I find I'm not focusing on those features much when I'm driving. Maybe because I'm worried about getting to work. I like driving it.
When I test drove a white DE before we saw the RF, I drove it like 10 miles and the avg mpg went from 14 to 41.....
I was super impressed.
I set a new mark on my morning commute.
http://mirageforum.com/forum/attachm...0&d=1463173790I think the big difference on this trip was an earlier start with less traffic and good light timing (less stops.) I was able to keep a speed between 25 - 30 mph with a fair amount of coasting. Keep in mind my ride in is mostly downhill.
I recall there is an app for cycling that tracks a route in distance, time, and elevation.
Those are some nice numbers. Do you coast in neutral or in gear? Also, I used to use an app like that, it was called Cyclemeter.
I switch between both depending on the situation. I coast in neutral if I have a clear road ahead and nobody behind, and I'll put it in gear for deceleration, including using my AC compressor for additional drag if needed.
...I just reviewed my morning commute using a topographic map and I calculate my elevation from start to finish at a 390' drop. It is mostly a gentle grade with a roughly 150' descent near my parking spot. It is at the bottom of that hill that I get the best numbers and that is where I try to take a photo of the MID. So while it is not exactly a fair comparison, it's still fun.
For me, anyways. :)
I just noticed something funny. Looks like I'll need to fill up soon. :)
I visit the pump so infrequently with this car that I sometimes forget that it needs more.
I'm at an NTB now for an alignment check.
NTB says my alignment is good.
http://mirageforum.com/forum/attachm...3&d=1463252983Well, mostly.
http://mirageforum.com/forum/attachm...4&d=1463252983There's only a few red shaded areas.
One of these days I'll learn how to properly orient a photo for posting here... :)
Well, an update. Today on the ride home an older female driving a BMW started her oncoming left turn a little early and our mirrors kissed. She drove off, leaving our fated mirrors abandoned in the intersection.
I recovered the parts - two shattered mirrors and plastic covers. I think I will be able to re-use my cover, though it is a bit scratched. The mirror glass popped off the folding frame. The integrated turn signal is oddly intact and operational - I thought for sure it would have been demolished. Go figure. It appears I could simply replace the glass with new and reuse the cover. I now wonder where I can get replacement mirror glass, as a replacement mirror assembly runs roughly $500 MSRP (refer to my post in this thread - heated mirrors U.S.). Ick. I have no doubt her BMW mirror will cost less.
I swerved away from her. Otherwise, I'm sure the damage would be much worse. I'm a bit concerned about replacement parts and repairs for this little car. I've had it not yet three months. Let's calculate one sideswipe:
1 bumper
1 hood
1 headlight assembly
1 front fender
1 front left door
1 rear left door
1 rear left quarterpanel
1 rear bumper
Frame straightening?
1 rear axle
Add it up? Potential total loss. Oh, don't forget a mirror. :)
Ongoing debate about repairability: priceless.
I guess I'm lucky. It could have been worse.
In other news, I am carrying a gas can in the trunk (boot for our UK readers?) for when I run out of fuel. I am at the blinking fuel display and have been for a couple days now.
I don't want to run it completely dry, as I understand it is not nice to run the fuel pump dry. I might fill up before that point. In the meantime, I have exactly 1.000 gallon of gasoline in a fuel container at the ready for this experiment.
I like driving this little car - I find it fun to see how far I can go on a tank of gas. Other drivers don't think a slow moving little car is quite so fun... That is why I amended this car's designation as Speck | aka Ego Awareness Training. I will probably shorten that a bit...
Sometimes I get a kick out of impatient drivers - sometimes they make me sick. Even though I am going faster than the posted speed limit some poor tortured souls simply can't bear to be behind me and must race by - only to meet again at the next traffic light. Sad, really.
This aspect of driving this little car contributes to the moniker Ego. It tends to illustrate how our Egos influence our decisions and actions.
One feature I like about this car is it's cupholders. My first cars had no such thing. This one has three. That's Living Large right there.
My favorite is the one between the front seats aft of the emergency brake lever. It is accessible for all - driver and passengers. Just mind that the pooch doesn't help herself to a lick while underway.
More soon. Looking forward to my next fill-up.
If I make it.
Doh! Sorry to hear about the mirror casualty. Car-part.com does show a right hand mirror in blue for $70 if you're looking to replace it.
I saw that. I'll have to keep an eye on parts there for if/when a reasonably priced driver's side mirror comes up. Thanks for pointing that out.
Specks's fourth fuel log entry was a bit worse than the previous, but not bad. Not like my fuel consumption hero, 25Plus.
I want to use my free oil change at the dealer soon to change out the old factory engine oil. I would also like them to do an alignment check and compare their findings with my NTB check last weekend. Has anyone else noticed any differences in driveability with their first oil change? After the first dealer change, I think I will start a 6 month / 5,000 mile oil change interval, and I think I will be using Mobil 1 products.
Much gratitude for this forum. Thanks everyone.
I didn't notice anything after my first oil change. That is until I did my next one and realized the dealer overfilled the oil with just over a quart extra. I'm now doing a 7,000 mile interval with Mobil 1 as well. If you go on their website you can get a $12 rebate on 5 quarts, and $15 if you also buy their filter.
I filled up before running out and put the plastic gas can in the garage. Wouldn't want that in the car, especially in an accident. :(
I put 8.391 US gallons in. The tank is rated for 9.2 US gallons. So I could have gone farther? Some of the neighborhoods I was driving through that day - let's just say I didn't want to run out of gas there. That and there was some debris in the bottom of that gas can. Maybe I'll try again some other day.
Now I need to get rid of the gas that's in that can. Maybe burn it in someone's lawn mower. You might be surprised to know my mowers use no gas.
:)
I'm about due for another fill up. Pretty boring and uneventful, really. Which brings up a few thoughts about my new car.
This is my first new car. For over 30 years, I owned and (drove/driven?) used vehicles. I learned a bit about how they work by necessity, as do many of us. It's noteworthy how much money we can (and cannot) spend on transportation - it seems there is almost a minimum cost to it.
It was - and still is - tempting to get a more expensive car. No doubt it will be a better driving experience over my Mirage. There are many cars that take corners with more confidence, accelerate faster, brake shorter, and are more stable at highway speeds.
Then I consider the various limits imposed on driving. Laws of physics that determine how fast any given chassis can corner, how fast a drivetrain can accelerate, the shortest distance any brake & tire combo can stop a vehicle of a given weight. Legal limits such as speed limits and traffic controls at intersections. Feel free to add more of your own.
There's been some impressive improvements in automotive technology in these areas. Recent threads on this particular message board have turned into debates, such as the thread on auto braking. Safety technology often draws praise for helping save lives, and criticism for driving up costs, increasing complexity, and of course governmental oversight - practically a tangle of debate.
Considering the range of vehicles that I have driven, I am impressed with the list of features that come with this car, even in base form, whether the feature is meant for safety or not. For examples, I like the MIVEC variable valve timing, the automatic climate control, the body size and shape (it's enough for 99% of my transportation needs without carting around extra weight and baggage) the Active Stability Control (ASC) which I hardly ever notice working.
I would love to have a big, fast car. I would not like having to pay for it. I'm put off by the cost of cars these days. If only money was no object...
One goal of mine with this car is to save money, not spend it.
The Rockford Fosgate audio, along with a navigation radio unit would be pretty cool though... :)
So here I have my Mirage. Not a bad little car. It works for me, and I don't have to spend loads of money to get around reliably.
I'd love a bigger faster car too and I've had all kinds of vehicles, usually older ones. This car keeps ME out of trouble and with the stick it's fun enough. And the amount of cash I am saving on gas over what I have usually driven in the past is a big plus. Not to mention I have not had to do any repairs, which was getting tiring and expensive! I sold my 3 lawn ornaments to use as a down payment when I bought the Mirage.
I made another fuel log entry. I'm keeping track of the amount of error of my MID fuel consumption gauge from tank to tank, and averaging the error.
The fuel economy of this car is largely meeting and exceeding my expectations when I was researching a replacement car. Thanks to this forum and it's members, I was not mislead.
Thanks to everyone. :) Cheers!
Also my first! 20 years of many used vehicles for me, and I totally concur the necessity to know how
they work absolutely helped me on my journey of mechanical knowledge... I now have a never
ending desire to fill my head with all useful (and non-useful) info I possibly can about the Mirage,
even though I know I'll most likely never have to turn a serious wrench on it.
Stupid car. I want to drive it so much that I look for reasons to go somewhere.
Kind of negates the premise of saving money.
