Mitsubishi Canada confirms "Mirage" model name for 2014 car ... or do they?

    Or do they?

While Mitsu's new subcompact "world car" has already gone on sale in multiple countries under the "Mirage" model name, there has been some doubt about whether or not that name will be used in North America. (The European version will be wearing the "Space Star" badge instead of Mirage.)

Previously, we have seen reports such as:

... another Mitsubishi official said the car may not be sold under the Mirage name in the U.S. "We're getting the car," he said. "We just don't know if it's going to be called Mirage." - source
Mitsubishi Canada appeared to end the name game speculation last week. In a January 3 press release, its VP of sales/marketing described the debut of new models in 2013:

... an exciting slate of launches including the all-new Mitsubishi Mirage subcompact, and next generation Outlander compact sport utility vehicle," said Tony Laframboise, vice president, Sales and Marketing at MMSCAN.

UPDATE, Jan 17th: that release has since been revised on the Mitsu Can website - "Mirage" has been removed from the above quote. The wording of the original press release can still be seen elsewhere on the web, however, eg: http://www.noodls.com/view/9B3AA38FB...AD891E45D93D15

I contacted Mitsu Canada's PR manager, John Arnone, and he confirmed the Mirage name in an email this week (Jan 7th).

So, while that appears to settle it for the Canadian market, the $60,000 question is whether or not Mitsubishi USA will follow suit, or complicate North American marketing efforts by calling the new car something else south of the 49th.

Montreal Gazette is calling it "Mirage":
Quebec has been Mitsu’s best Canadian market since it opened for business here 10 years ago, so the company chose Montreal as the place to stage the North American unveiling of its new subcompact, the Mirage.

    As is Autonet.ca:
Expectations are the vehicle will be marketed in Canada as the new Mirage.

So is le Guide de l'Auto (French):
Aujourd’hui, le constructeur nippon est très fier de dévoiler la Mitsubishi Mirage à Montréal, en grande première nord-américaine.

    Unfortunately, the name game continues.

Two French language Quebec web sites are saying the reason for the car's nameless introduction in Montreal is that the Colt name is under consideration:

Présentement, la haute direction de Mitsubishi jongle toujours entre les noms Mirage ou Colt.

    Source: http://www.guideautoweb.com/articles/18910/
Translation: "Currently, Mitsubishi upper management is waffling between the names Mirage or Colt."

    And...

Petite note: il est possible que ce modèle s’appellera plutôt Mitsubishi Colt sur notre marché.

    Source: http://journalmetro.com/opinions/si-...lus-attendues/
Translation: "Note: it's possible this model will be called Mitsubishi Colt in our market."

I would have preferred Colt, but Sputnik matches appearance.

I found forum thread #1 out of curiosity to see how this all started. Thanks for a great forum, MetroMPG & Daox!

As soon as we found out Mitsu was going to be bringing its efficient 1.2L triple to North America, we jumped at the chance to start this forum... even though we weren't 100% sure what the car would be called.

Lucky guess that they stuck with Mirage.

But I think we were even ready with different domain names for Colt if we had to change it.
