Thread: Cooling Fan Came Apart

I saw one one car-part.com 50 miles from you for $69. It was from a 2018 cvt car though so at a minimum you would have needed to re-use your old shroud. But if the fan and motor wouldn't work for you it'd cost you 100 miles of driving...Would be a good experiment though.

Anyone have a source for a new one before I call the dealer or a junkyard Tuesday?
I wonder if this could have been the issues with Dirk's AC. The fan not spinning fast enough would cause higher pressures than normal and tripped a switch/sensor to shut off the AC until he got moving and more airflow. No temp gauge on the dash (are there?) so no way to tell if it is over normal temps.

I had a 2017 melt the fan a year or so ago. Driver didn't notice and eventually the red overtemp light came on. The motor still worked but the center of the fan was melted away. I'll see if I have a pic still.

That was my first thought. If the fan was moving at all, I probably would have overlooked it. I never would have suspected that the fan would break free of the motor. But there's a lot of plastic here and a lot of heat. I suppose this is another one of those Mirage "always check this first" kind of problems.

Just because I like posting photos, here's a 2015 CVT Mirage fan set up that was on eBay...

Those things can happen. I had to change a water pump on my bosses twin turbo Volvo due to the impeller not spinning as fast as the shaft it used to be pressed tightly on. It started running hotter and hotter until it didn't move enough coolant to drive.

You guys beat me to it. This was the first thing I thought of too.

Dirk, go track your G4 down, analyze it, and let us know!

No, that would of been obvious at the shop. They even outsourced it to a specialist. My HVAC issue could of been a slow leak or it could of been related to all the electrical issues we've had. I'm not an expert so I can't say 100%, but I seriously doubt it.

You woulda known if the fan quit cause the red temp light would have come on once it over heated.

What if the cooling fan blade spun a fraction of the shaft speed due to slippage? Can this happen on a fan motor?

this is a very normal issues of mirage especially for the early models the cause is always the motor, the blade is melting because the bearing of the motor is worn out that causing the shaft to heat up and eventually detached itself from the aluminum inserts, i think the fan is the same for the CVT and MT their only difference is the shroud that distributes the air from the radiator..and the motor is either 4 or 2 pin.
