Mine's a stick, so I would agree, it isnt a CVT "issue". Since mine only did it for the first few months of ownership, Im sticking with manufacturing lubricants/protectants. Kind of like when you plug a brand new toaster or skillet in for the first time. The heat burns off the oils. I'm thinking longer/harder drives heat things up a bit more and burn off progressively more and more until its gone.

I tried to replicate the smell it made on the mountains and it and the highway last weekend. I couldn't get anything consistent. I was hoping I could. My wife drives it around town for work and see never smelled it. Maybe it was because we were driving cross country for 3 hour periods between stops? I have no clue. Ill try again next time I go on a road trip.

I've smelled this on my long cross country road trip, only and the second and third legs of the trip tho.. the vehicle had like 6000-8000 miles on it.. my mirage now has over 11,400 miles and i have only had that burning rubber smell on the two legs of my trip, each leg was about 1200 miles and was driven within 18-20 hours.. i was never able to pin point what it was

I had the funny smell the first week, and haven't noticed it since. Outdoor temperatures were around freezing then. I attributed the odor to the electric heater.

Can somebody verify if the exhaust header is plastic?

The exhaust header is not made of plastic.

I did not think it was likely but there was also a time I thought plastic intake manifolds and valve covers would melt.
Plus my friend has a remote control toy truck that has an internal combustion engine with a plastic exhaust.
