Oil Filter Part Number

Scratching my Motorcraft recommendation ... looks like Ford does not warranty their products for anything but Ford or Ford-recommended applications.

Also updated my info post on my latest filter preferences after researching warranty info.

This is my invoice listing part #'s as follows:

Oil Filter: MZ690116
Gasket, Oil Pan Drain Pl: MD050317 (drain plug gasket?)
Engine Oil, Synthetic, Ow: MZ320106

Why they needed a gasket is beyond me, I didn't really look at the invoice until I got home.

It's interesting to me that they put on a MZ690116 oil filter ... Wix's equivalent (57092) is not listed as applicable to the Mirage.

So should I be nervous, is it the wrong filter?
The parts manager did say that Mitsubishi used a short filter and a tall filter, I thought he said the short one was on the Mirage.

Nah, I wouldn't worry. The MZ690116 looks like it is thread-compatible with MZ690072 and 1230A105 ... it's just that the MZ690116 the dealer installed might have 25% more filter material.

The MZ690116 is generally used on 6-cyl Mitsubishis whereas the MZ690072 is generally used for 3/4-cyl.

Or could it add restrictions to the oil flow and increase drag on the oil pump, similar to running heavier oil?

A bigger oil filter than spec could give you a longer OCI ... on the downside, it could potentially be slower to reach full flow from a cold start, possibly resulting in greater startup wear on the engine.

Fram filter dissection reveals cardboard endcaps (easily youtube-able). I'm sure it'll work OK, they're obviously just not the most well constructed. Judging from that, I doubt the filter media is top rate either. Never thought to check since Fram did not fall under my considerations, but you may also want to check to see if it has Anti Drain Back Valve feature. Our oil filters go threads down, so for me, this is important.
