service manual section 11a, shows entire process... looks like a pita..
I see what you mean. The service manual shows the procedure to measure the valve clearances and also shows how to calculate which tappet to select for replacement, so valve adjustments are done by replacing the valve tappets. Thanks for pointing this out!

I was wondering because I don't own a mirage yet, what oil weight is listed in the manual? Is 5w-30 "allowed" to be an alternative? And what's this "valve adjustment" thing I read about. I mean is this necessary? I haven't heard anyone adjusting valves since I was a kid in the 80's and the kids down the street would be adjusting valves in there old clunkers...

I use 5w-20, helps with initial chatter. 0w-20 is recommended. Keep in mind, other grades are used in other countries. Really, 5w-30 will be fine.

The repair manual has a section on valve clearance inspection and adjustment.

I was wondering if the engine developed a problem and you changed your own oil when recommended, (or earlier), would the dealer deny warranty work because they didn't change it? (if it was an internal engine issue)

Nope.. never a problem. Just like 5w-20. There are laws protecting people who do their own maintenance with proper documentation. I'd like them to try to one up me.

    good to know, thanks.
they would probably say "the manual says 5-20, you were using 5-30."

That's when you can show them the entry in the manual that shows the range of motor oil viscosity that can be run in the 3A92. What's more important is that the motor oil meets ILSAC specifications.
