Nevermind my previous comments, I just re-read the spot in the manual where it talks about this. They do make it very clear that it's "recommended". I'm not sure why this didn't register the first time I read it; I think I saw 0w-20 and 5w-20 and assumed those there the only ones allowed. I will definitely be considering heavier oil for my next change.

It’s unlikely they’d be able to tell used 5w30 vs. 5w20
Noise has continued to increase. My service manager feels it is piston scoring and I am getting a new block under warranty. Bye 0w-20.

When are you hearing this? I've noticed a bit of noise driving the first quarter mile or so a few times this winter and I don't like it.
Can any of our fellow members in other countries read their owners manual and see what oil is recommended in their country? If it's a thicker oil, I'm switching.

I wonder if it's worth switching at this point, or if the damage has already been done just stick it out and get a replacement... 25k miles here. Hmm.

I started getting the noise around 47k miles. It is most pronounced for the first few minutes of operation. It smoothes out but never stops altogether once the engine is warm.

New block has been in for 3 weeks and no issues so far. greatly improved MPG at all operating conditions. Could not get any pics :-(
