Aftermarket CVT fluid - Would you use it?

Hi guys, no where near the point of servicing the CVT yet, but my mind does ponder.

Manual states CVTF-J4 (Mitsubishi Motors Genuine)

    Found this on Amsoil's site:

    http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...?code=CVTQT-EA

It indeed does list CVTF-J4 as being compatible.

    Would you guys use this?

Or how about this. How has everyone's experience been simply with using aftermarket transmission fluids when manual states you should only use [insert car brand here]'s genuine trans fluid?

    I'd use it.

If you're that much in question, do an oil analysis after you've used it a few thousand miles.

I've never risked using anything but OEM A/T fluid for my cars, although many do it with no problems. For a CVT, I wouldn't even think about aftermarket fluids.

I would use it if it represented a significant saving over Dealership cost.
    Will weld for beer.

Oh, it most definitely would be a VERY significant savings! That's why I was so interested in it.

I know the pulleys and band rely on certain amount of friction to be able to do what it does, so I'm definitely very cautious about the trans fluid I'm ultimately going to go with.

I honestly have no idea what I'm going to do. Probably keep pondering over it until I do get to the point I need to service the trans! Anyone else know what they're going to decide on?

I really doubt a company like Amsoil would sell you snake oil. If it isn't better than OEM, its at least as good. There is a fair chance it is the same stuff, and Amsoil just sells it for DIY types to feel good about.

You'll be pondering a long, long time.

I wouldn't recommend it. Even if it states it is the same fluid, it isn't
Mitsubishi change additives in it, happened wit their SPIII automatic fluid.
You put in the same fluid but aftermarket and it slowly destroyed the gearbox.
The CVT fluid that is used by Mitsubishi themselves only comes big barrels.

I am at 45 000 km, so I will be here in another 3 k. Does anyone have experience yet? Want to do this as cheap as possible. Student budgets never end~~~

(side note, anyone know anyone in southern ontario that would be cheap to do the actual deed?)

You can find CVT fluid for cheap, but I don't know if its okay to use. This stuff is available in canada for 9.5 CAD

I have a fealing that additive packages for the CTV fluids is going to differ greatly based on manufacture. I honestly wouldn't risk it without getting an analysis on the Mitsubishi brand and Ams-Oil version for comparison. Ams-Oil puts a lot of effort into their oils so I'm sure it's good stuff, but you really need to ensure its the right stuff.
