    Oil Change DIY

The car now has 9,190ish miles. Since the dealership recommended 5k mile intervals, I did mine at a little over 4k. Sounds reasonable?

    Materials needed:
    • shop towel/paper towels
    • gloves
    • 17mm socket/open wrench - for drain plug
    • socket wrench + oil filter removal adapter
    • 4 qt oil - I stuck to what the engine bay label said: 0w-20
    • *optional* laminated paper/plastic to guide oil from oil filter onto pan
    • pan deep enough for about 4 qt of oil
    • I used a plastic tote lid, 1.5' x 4' and placed it under the oil pan in case things splash around.

    Instructions:
    1. Make sure handbrake is engaged.
    2. Place heavy objects to block rear tires from rolling (front and back).
    3. Put front of the car in stands or ramp.
    4. Remove oil filler cap.
    5. Using a 17mm sized socket or open wrench, undo the oil pan drain plug.
    6. Wait for the oil to come to a stop. Walk around. Cool off. Drink some beer.
    7. Place the oil filter wrench into a socket wrench (will grab more info later) .
    8. Reach up to insert the oil filter adapter. Start loosening the oil filter.
    9. After a few twists, before oil comes rushing down, place plastic folder to guide oil.
    10. Make sure the oil pan (filled with old oil) is placed at the right spot, close to the plastic folder guide, but make sure the oil pan drain has stopped dripping. Else, put a paper towel or two for the drain plug drips.
    11. From the top of the engine, make your way (hands) into the oil filter. I found that my right hand pushed the filter forward (towards the engine) while my left loosened it until I was able to catch it with one of my hands. Can't quite remember which one lol.
    12. Wait for more oil to drain.
    13. Using the new oil, prep the rim and center/thread groove of the new oil filter by dabbing some oil.
    14. Insert the new oil filter in place from under the car. Real tricky on the first try. Turn the filter to the left (my feet in front of the car, if for some reason your feet is facing the rear of the car, turn the filter to the right)
    15. Using paper/shop towels, clean areas close to oil filter and drain plug.
    16. Using new oil, clean and lubricate oil pan drain plug.
    17. Replace/reinsert oil pan drain plug.
    18. Add oil. I added 3 quarts and noticed oil level was at 3/4ish.
    19. Start the engine to get some oil circulating. Wait 1 min. Shut it off.
    20. Check oil dipstick again. It should be closer to the top - should be less than 3/4 of the way because of oil filter.
    21. Add 1/4 quart. Check dipstick. I added 1/2 quart and the oil goes above the top dot.
    22. Turn the car on again. This time wait 2 mins. Shut the car off. Check dipstick. Add oil to taste.
    23. Replace oil filler cap.
    24. With the car turned off, push on the trip/odo button until you reach the wrench with mileage.
    25. Hold the odo/trip button until wrench flashes.
    26. Push the odo/trip button again and the word 'clear' will pop up.
    27. Push the odo/trip button again. This should make the number higher than what it originally was.
    28. Grab another beer.
    29. Report to the forum your experience.
    30. Thank or flame me if I reported something wrong lol.

The pictures are on my phone. Don't feel like doing anything else at 12:43am. I may post them tomorrow, maybe later on. Since I did this at night, I didnt video. Hopefully the next one will be goPro'd.

    Good post.

    I'd also add:

1a. Place heavy objects, like bricks, behind the rear tires to prevent rolling.

Yay!!! One question on 14. Turn to the left, like counter-clockwise? Is that correct? And tell me what oil and oil filter you use

When you're laying down under the car with your feet in front of the car, twist counter clockwise.

So far, 2500 and no oil consumption. How about yours at 4k, had you added any oil before the change?
Thanks and have a nice Labor Day!
