You can buy a transponder key blank on Ebay for less than $10. The part number is MIT17A-PT. Have it cut to fit your car then program your car to use it using the procedure in the owners manual. This works fine but you have to have 2 good keys to use the procedure. When I get a car with one of these keys I always make a third key before I have a chance to lose one.

    Hi,

Finally I got my key done at local locksmith. It is transponder key (no remote buttons). Cost $95 + tax.

eBay? I will be surprised if aftermarket one for say Outlander would not work.

I was looking at the online manual for reprogramming a new key blank and it says "except for vehicles sold in Canada". Not sure what that is about. I misplaced my second key, and want to get a new one, but at $400, I'm in no hurry and will keep looking for the old one (I'm sure it's in a pocket somewhere!)

If the US procedure won't work (I have no idea if it will or not, never tried) there's one cheap option that may work (but in all likelyhood won't). You might get lucky with ETACS decoder. Not to program the new key (I know it can't do that) but maybe you can enable the US programming feature and then try the US programming again.

If that turns out to be a waste of time, last resort would be to buy a used MUT-III. They are not cheap, about $600 - $1000. But you could resell it afterwards to get your money back.

Well, obviously the alternative is to just get a locksmith to do the work for you.

I also bought my 2014 used and got it without a second Fob. I got a second one from ebay for 95$, it was wiped and guaranteed to be programmable. I took it to the dealership and they were doubtful it would work. In the end it took the programming and they didn't charge me for it.

Here's a little more info: In Winnipeg, there are 2 locksmiths that advertise doing auto key reprogramming (Dakota Lock and Safe, Car Keys Replacement) - neither can do the Mitsubishi. The dealer price in Winnipeg is $430+tax (including key, cutting, programming).

Edit - I found Kildonan Lock Service in Winnipeg who say they can do it (minus the keyless entry) for $110, which is a whole lot better! I'll be heading there soon.

I wrote Mitsubishi Canada to express my frustration with a $430 key, and how that cannot help their brand's reputation.

Update: I found my second factory key, but the spare key blank I ordered from eBay came after, so I had it cut and tried the re-programming sequence outlined in the owner's manual "except for vehicles sold in Canada". My vehicle was sold in Canada, and the process did not work. I don't need three keys, so I'll just keep the spare in case I lock myself out.
