Supposedly the factory installed oil filter is quite difficult to get off, so it might be worthwhile to pay someone. After that, you're right, it's kinda crazy to be changed $50 for an oil change that requires about $9 in oil, a $3 filter, and 5 minutes of time (not counting the time it takes to drink a frosty beverage as the oil drains).

If you live near a dealer I would also suggest getting on their mailing list. I have been coupons both 2-3 dealers near me as well as Mitsu corporate since August (bought the car in July) with coupons, $35 synthetic oil changes, $10 tire rotations, the works. See how to get in on these deals!

If I could get synthetic oil changes for $35, I'd be one happy Mitsubishi owner. Does the Mirage REQUIRE synthetic oil? That also seems kind of nuts for an economy car. I know synthetic provides better engine wear protection and the viscosity breaks down more slowly. Considering I've been running various kinds of vehicles on conventional oil for years with no problems, some cars with as much as 200k miles, I see no reason to pay that hefty surcharge for synthetic oil.

The Mirage does require synthetic oil according to the dealer

Off-hand, do you know if the owner's manual mentions required synthetic oil? I ask because I wouldn't trust a dealerships word on that any farther than I can pick up my car and throw it.

The North American owner's manual recommends, but does not require, 0w-20. 0w-20 only comes in synthetic. Owner's manuals in other parts of the world have additional recommendations.

I'm running conventional oil without problems in my Mirage. It likes the 5w-30 Pennzoil (Yellow Bottle).

I knew my Mirage required 0w-20, but didn't realize it only comes as a synthetic. Good to know. I'm guessing that viscosity doesn't come in conventional oil because it's extremely thin oil. It wouldn't provide enough protection as a conventional oil at that viscosity. Have you noticed reduced performance and/or fuel economy running the thicker 5w-30 conventional oil?

Your dealer is ripping off people. Don't give them your business. That's highway robbery...almost literally!
