Ya its a nice light clutch but that tranny has to be shifted like a truck.... to shift it without clunk or grinding i can be on the gas very hard and have to wait to shift it in...

Ive almost been rear ended taking off because of how slow u have to do it.

Im thinking maybe the engine/tranny mount under the engine may be to blame. im thinking the entire combo is rocking too much causing it to shift bad?

    thoughts?

I don't understand these complaints and comparisons about grinding and clunking. Mine is really smooth, I wonder if there is variance in the feel or if its just individual preferences. You can feel when it sort of clicks into gear but I have driven a lot of manuals (86 escort, 87 mazda 323, 92 eclipse, 97 miata, 01 wrangler, 83 datsun truck, 88 audi90, 88 Festiva) and the only one that I found noticeably better was the Miata (which is to be expected).

Reverse is unsynchronized, so if stopped sometimes you have to shift into first initially then reverse, but in actual driving I have zero complaints about the clutch/gearbox on the ccar.

I agree with db1980 that the Mirage shifting is good. I'm an old geezer in my 60's and I've had lots of manual shift cars. I bought a new Chevy Vega in 1972 with a 3 speed. Shift quality on that car wasn't so good. It was like the shift lever was a rubber hose.

I thought all they used in the construction of Vegas was painted rust. Good to know there is some rubber in there. If this was in Indianapolis, I'm curious how long that thing lasted.

I do also wonder if maybe some of these Mirages are not adjusted quite right from the factory, or if it's very very cold climates that the people experiencing grinding are living in. Also agree that you can't judge it with the car sitting still, things have to be spinning for things like synchronizers to work.

I only had the Vega 3 years. I traded it for an Olds Omega in 75 because I wanted a larger car. The Vega was a solid and kind of fun car for the 3 years I had it.

@TheTransporter: I've said the same thing elsewhere, our 3-pot rocks hard! I've considered using an Ingalls Universal Torque Damper and attaching the bottom of the block to the frame somewhere.

Redline MTL 75w-80 GL-4 at $16.95 per quart . I've used their MT90 75w-90 GL-4 in Toyota manual transmissions with good results . No more grinding into reverse or other gears , easier shifting in cold , and no notchiness . Go here for details and where to purchase or order . http://www.redlineoil.com/Products.aspx?pcid=7 .

There is a bar underneath that dampens the movement im talking about. But i think the rubber is too soft. I may look into buying just the bushings and getting them made to urethane.

I shift like a gorilla, so I don't count. Can't find 'em, grind 'em!
