We have 2 mirages, one at 14,000 and one near 17,000 miles. No brake problems yet.

Mine's 39.000 km now and brakes are still like new. You can check this quite easily. This car's handbrake is connected to the rear drum brake (my galant has its own handbrake pad). My handbrake feels just like new. Only 2 clicks needed to brake it.
I'm not a pedal braker, am an engine braker.

True but it doesn't mean it will last shorter than other cars. Depends on the user I believe
