I must say I was a little surprised to see that it didn't use direct injection. But, their reasoning makes sense. If it can save them a chunk of money and they pass that on, that is great. The car is already going to be competing (and IMO will probably win) for the highest rated mileage of any non-hybrid in my market (US).
It was interesting to hear that they also went with multi point injection because...
...one reason for not using direct injection was its incompatibility with the poor-quality fuel found in some of its target markets.

Direct injection has the advantage of lowering fuel consumption, but:
Main disadvantages of common-rail direct injection are:
1) It produces very much more fine dust particles in exhaust gas. Much stricter european emission regulations in the near future are on the way, particularly because of fine dust particles from direct injection petrol (gasoline) engines. They already produce more fine dust than modern diesel engines with particulate filters.
2) Repair costs can be are very much higher than with conventional injection. The high pressure pump can easily cost a month's wages.

One of the things that attracted me to the Mirage was exactly this: a back-to-basics approach with an emphasis on clever, simple, solid engineering with no gimmicks. Something I can work on after the warranty expires.

mitsubishi had direct injection cars in the 90's,and since then they have stayed away from direct injection, most of the direct injection cars sold in america have issue with clogged intake ports, and high pressure fuel pump issue vw,audi, bmw, mazda, etc [ATTACH]1137[/ATTACH

Hyundai used direct injection and has fuel cleaner as part of their maintenance routine. Every other scheduled service visit, as I recall. Guess this is meant to fight build up.
