Mitsubishi Motors is planning to make 30,000 Mirage subcompacts at a factory in the Philippines it purchased from Ford in 2014, according to Nikkei:

MANILA -- Lured by tax incentives, Mitsubishi Motors plans to start producing a small vehicle in the Philippines as early as 2016.

The Japanese carmaker seeks to churn out an annual 30,000 or so Mirage compacts. It is also planning new molding facilities. With new-auto sales growing as the economy expands, Mitsubishi Motors sees the country joining Thailand and Indonesia as a pillar of operations.

    [...]

The company has made inroads here since the 1960s. It trails only Toyota Motor in market share at roughly 20%. Positioning the Philippines in line with such other major markets as Thailand and Indonesia, Mitsubishi Motors plans to double annual sales here to 100,000 vehicles by 2020. Mitsubishi Motors will tout the fuel economy of the Mirage, its mainstay compact car.

Makes sense, the Mirage is a big seller there and there is a big aftermarket there with a lot of customization going on.

And I wonder if national pride -- having a "home built" Mirage -- will increase sales.

Don't think we have that mentality as much as people here.

I wonder if it will drop costs though.

According to this it is 50K units not 30. What is the facility capacity?

Are those for Philippine only or for export to other markets (US, CAN, EU)?

Not sure, would be a good question to ask on the Filipino Mirage Forum. I'm sure somebody on the board knows.

    That is good news.

Are they still building in Thailand as well?

I wonder which ones we'll see here in the US or if that is only for the Philippines?

Yes, still building in Thailand. That's their main production line.

I'm not sure if PH Mirages are intended only for local consumption.

Five months after presenting the first locally manufactured Mirage G4 sedan, it has rolled out another Pinoy-made product. Say mabuhay to the first Mirage hatchback off MMPC's assembly line in Santa Rosa, Laguna.
