Plasti-Dipping emblems
I decided to black out my emblems with Plasti Dip.
Before:
Materials needed: Rubbing alcohol, paper towels, Plasti-Dip, and masking tape. Not pictured is toothpicks.
Use the rubbing alcohol to clean the emblems, you want them SUPER CLEAN and dry before applying the Plasti-Dip.
Mask off the area around the emblem, overspray can be removed but is a pain. For the front end, cover the air intake, you DO NOT want Plasti-Dip in your radiator.
The first coat should be very light, enough to cover but not completely.
Wait 5-10 minutes between coats. Apply each coat a little thicker and in a different spray direction.
You should put on 4-5 coats of Plasti-Dip, I did 6 due to Pennsylvania's wonderful gravel covered roads...
Wait 30 minutes after the last coat, remove the tape and the excess Plasti-Dip. TAKE YOUR TIME.
Voila, black diamonds...
The pitiful amount of tape I used on the front end was a learning curve. Use a microfiber towel to clean off any overspray.
I prepared the tailgate in a much different fashion...
Progress...
The finished product. All blacked out...
Getting the excess Plasti-Dip out of the letters is tedious. This is where the toothpicks come into play. TAKE YOUR TIME!
Total cost of this mod was $5.99 for the can of Plasti-Dip which I purchased from Lowe's. Total time to do the project was about three hours and a lot of that time is waiting between coats.
