Canada: Mirage name confirmed, with best in class fuel economy. Priced under $13k

The speculation is over: Mitsubishi Canada has announced -- finally -- that its new subcompact car will carry the Mirage name in the Great White North.

(Todays news also inadvertently revealed the fuel economy ratings for the U.S. 5-speed version of the car: U.S: 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage 5-speed manual mileage/MPG )

Mitsubishi Canada's Tony Laframboise officially names the company's new subcompact

Mitsu has also provided fuel economy figures (estimates) that show both the CVT and 5-speed versions of the car will have the best non-hybrid fuel economy in the country:

    City Highway Combined
    Mirage SE
    1.2L, CVT automatic
    5.3 L/100 km
    53 mpg (Imperial)
    44 mpg (US)
    18.8 km/L
    4.4 L/100 km
    64 mpg (Imperial)
    53 mpg (US)
    22.7 km/L
    4.9 L/100 km
    58 mpg (Imp)
    48 mpg (US)
    20.5 km/L
    Mirage
    1.2L, 5-speed manual
    5.9 L/100 km
    48 mpg (Imperial)
    40 mpg (US)
    17 km/L
    4.6 L/100 km
    62 mpg (Imperial)
    52 mpg (US)
    22 km/L
    5.3 L/100 km
    53 mpg (Imperial)
    44 mpg (US)
    18.8 km/L

If these numbers are made official, Chevrolet will have to quit running a current series of ads for the Cruze ECO, which tout it as having the best non-hybrid highway fuel economy, at 4.6 L/100 km.

Currently -- officially -- the 3 most efficient gasoline cars sold in the country are: (Source)

    Car City Highway
    Scion (Toyota) iQ
    1.3L, automatic
    5.5 L/100 km 4.7 L/100 km
    Smart Fortwo
    1.0L, automatic
    5.8 L/100 km 4.7 L/100 km
    Kia Rio
    1.6L, 6-speed manual
    6.6 L/100 km 4.9 L/100 km

Fuel economy is a growing focus for Mitsu, according to VP of sales & marketing Tony Laframboise, who describes Mirage as the company's “latest ultra-efficient vehicle”, adding, “Fuel efficiency is our global focus, our company mission.”

Nice to see automakers competing for this particular crown, especially minus the "hybrid premium". The Mirage will cost decidedly less than a hybrid -- Mitsu says it will start at under CAD $13,000 when it shows up at dealerships later this year.

2014 Mitsubishi Mirage Lands in Edmonton
Model name, 64 mpg confirmed at Motor Show

Edmonton (April 17, 2013) – Against the back-drop of the Edmonton Motor Show, Mitsubishi Motor Sales of Canada today announced the name of its all-new hatchback as the Mitsubishi Mirage, and confirmed the anticipated fuel economy for the three-cylinder, five-door car will be the best among subcompacts sold in Canada.

“It’s official: Canada’s newest subcompact is the Mitsubishi Mirage,” said Tony Laframboise, vice president, Sales & Marketing, noting the Mirage nameplate exists in other markets and is returning to North America.
Rated at 4.4 L/100 km (64 mpg) in highway driving, Mirage will be Canada’s most fuel efficient, gasoline-powered subcompact when it goes on sale this fall.

“Mirage will lead in fuel economy, offer tremendous value for money and include a suite of safety features in a youthful, fun-to-drive small car with a starting price below $13,000,” he added.

Mirage’s combined city/highway fuel economy will be 4.9 L/100 km (58 mpg) and, for city driving, 5.3 L/100 km (53 mpg) for CVT-equipped models. The entry-level Mirage SE with five-speed, manual transmission is rated at 5.3 L/100 km (53 mpg) in combined driving, 4.6 L/100 km (62 mpg) highway and 5.9 L/100 km (48 mpg) in city driving.

Displayed in expressive Green Metallic paint, the five-passenger Mirage was officially named by Laframboise and Canada’s top-selling Mitsubishi dealer, Kevin Robertson, of Edmonton’s South Side Mitsubishi, during a media presentation.

Based on the ‘Global Small’ concept car, the 1.2-litre, three-cylinder Mirage becomes the fifth model in Mitsubishi’s Canadian line-up. When it arrives at MMSCAN’s 84 dealerships this fall, it will follow the 2014 Outlander as the second of two major new-model launches this year.

Preliminary Mirage specifications are: Length, 3,780 mm; width, 1665 mm; height, 1500 mm; wheelbase, 2450 mm; wheels/tires, 165/65R14; output, 74 hp at 6,000 rpm and 74 ft. lbs. torque at 4,000 rpm.

Describing Mirage as Mitsubishi’s “latest ultra-efficient vehicle” Laframboise added: “Fuel efficiency is our global focus, our company mission”, noting the Mitsubishi RVR compact sport utility achieves class-leading 6.1 L/100 km and Mitsubishi Lancer is “not far behind”, while the all-electric i-MiEV hatchback never requires gasoline or an oil change.

Mirage is backed by the best warranty in the world – 10 years or 160,000 km limited powertrain, five years or 100,000 km limited new vehicle and five years, unlimited mileage roadside assistance. Additionally, it is designed with Mitsubishi’s Reinforced Impact Safety Evolution (RISE) body system. RISE combines an impact energy-absorbing front end with a high-rigidity cabin structure.

The newest Mitsubishi, Mirage comes with a palette of eight body colours including Green Metallic, Dark Grey Mica, Blue Mica, Red Metallic, White, Cool Silver Metallic, Purple Metallic and Black Mica.

How does the price they mention compare with the competition in Canada (Spark and Versa mainly)?
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

talldino: no kidding about taking their time!

daox: get this... in this video taken today of the Canadian Mirage, there's a sign at the front of the car that says

"Class leading: warranty, fuel economy, value, price". Class leading price, huh?

For Mirage to have class-leading price, it would have to beat the base Chevy Spark, which is currently listed on www.gm.ca at $13,345 (though GM is offering a cash credit that brings it to $13,095.

The base Nissan Versa sedan is listed at 13,599 on www.nissan.ca.

So it sounds like Mitsu is indeed aiming to make the car the least expensive in this country.

That's great news Metro for them to call the car Mirage there And now there is also confirmation that you will have a choice of transmissions. Have they given any time frame as to when they will be ready for sale?

They're saying the same thing as the U.S: "autumn". No more specific than that.
