Fuelly MPG Comparison: Mirage vs. Spark vs. Fit vs. Yaris

Just did a quick comparo on fuelly.com on the average mpg between the 2015 Mirage vs 2015 Spark vs 2015 Fit vs 2015 Yaris. Mirage is kicking butt.

Based on data from 13 vehicles, 253 fuel-ups and 66,275 miles of driving, the 2015 Mitsubishi Mirage gets a combined Avg MPG of 39.01 with a 0.94 MPG margin of error.

Based on data from 8 vehicles, 88 fuel-ups and 22,953 miles of driving, the 2015 Chevrolet Spark gets a combined Avg MPG of 35.57 with a 1.45 MPG margin of error.

Based on data from 307 vehicles, 6,820 fuel-ups and 1,871,627 miles of driving, the 2015 Honda Fit gets a combined Avg MPG of 35.82 with a 0.14 MPG margin of error.

Based on data from 11 vehicles, 147 fuel-ups and 44,491 miles of driving, the 2015 Toyota Yaris gets a combined Avg MPG of 37.22 with a 1.46 MPG margin of error.

And if you compare to all the 1.2L Mirages in our own fuel log, Mirage is doing even better than the smaller Fuelly sample:

    42.8 MPG (US) = 18.2 KM/L = 5.5 L/100 KM = 51.4 MPG (UK)
    1.2L, Both transmissions
    105 cars

    http://mirageforum.com/forum/emgarage-stats.php

We're closing in on a million kilometers (~600k mi.) tracked in our log.

PS: one thing you have to watch out for doing Fuelly comparisons is the engine size of the various cars. Euro engines are typically smaller & more efficient than the base engine offered in the States.

2016 Fit, 2017's data sample too small to be accurate, but so far it's worse than the 2016's

Those Yaris numbers are impressive. And last time I drove one - a 2008, it had waaaay more power than Mirage. Toyota does a good job of keeping their cars light and fuel efficient. As for the Fit, it's not even in the same league as Mirage. Very quick and feels infused with quality. As it should at a real world price for mid level trim 7k higher than the Mitsu. Yes, that spread takes incentives into consideration.

Yes. WHen I calculated all factors (especially the price of 2015 Mirage compared to the competitors) I believe it gives the best bang for the buck.

And if you can buy one cash used it is a total bargain since the car devaluates like crazy after a year or 2.

I also notice that the first year or two of a particular model drivers seem to record higher milage than the ones that are newer. It must be either the older ones have been broken in or hyper-miler types are early adapters. Has anyone else who's noticed that care to posit why that might be? WRT milage after break in, mine in the Mirage has not gone up, though I'm probably driving it with a little less regard to maximizing fuel economy.

Now, I don't know your driving style, but I suggest you try driving techniques that maximize fuel economy for at least one tank. The Mirage will definitely reward your efforts here!

To help with this, consider getting some means to monitor your instant fuel economy from your OBDII port. Many here use something like ScanGauge, but I got a bluetooth adapter and use an app on my smart phone to get more info, including logging. Though cheap ELM327 OBDII adapters are available, I paid for better quality with faster response and more features, and it cost one third what the ScanGauge goes for. Knowing instant fuel economy can give helpful feedback to train your driving style to reduce fuel consumption.

I now have a Toyota iA and got it for 13800 plus fees. I get a bit better mpg 39.9 vs mirage 38.8. But I got cruise and a bit bitter car. I am happy.

@remusrm - I'd venture to say the iA is quite a bit better than the Mirage. Did both the cars have the same transmission type (manual or auto)? Does the iA have much more power than the Mirage? If you traded in the Mirage, how was the trade in value? Not sure why those Scion step children (iA and iM) aren't selling well. With the incentives, they both seem like good deals.
