RECALL Subject : Delayed Air Bag Deployment due to Impact Sensor

Report Receipt Date: SEP 23, 2015
    NHTSA Campaign Number: 15V594000
    Component(s): AIR BAGS

Manufacturer: Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc.

    SUMMARY:

Mitsubishi Motors North America, Inc. (Mitsubishi) is recalling certain model year 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage vehicles manufactured July 27, 2013, to November 20, 2013, and 2012 Mitsubishi i-MiEV vehicles manufactured October 28, 2011, to September 7, 2012. Due to an increased resistance in the impact sensor for the air bag system, in the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the frontal, side and/or curtain air bags when the SRS warning is illuminated, the frontal air bag may have a delayed deployment and/or the side and curtian air bag may not deploy at all.

    CONSEQUENCE:

In the event of a crash, an air bag that does not deploy or deploys late, increases the risk of occupant injury.

    REMEDY:

Mitsubishi will notify owners, and dealers will replace the affected impact sensors, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a notification schedule. Owners may contact Mitsubishi customer service at 1-888-648-7820. Mitsubishi's number for this recall is SR-15-011.

    NOTES:

Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.

Both of mine were manufactured in September 2013, so it sounds like my blue one might be affected. I had the airbag light on soon after I bought it, then went to get it reset, and they couldn't find a problem. In my encounter with a bear cub yesterday, the airbags didn't deploy at all, but it wasn't nearly as bad of an impact as the photo above.

From the sound of it, I would imagine the delay is in the millisecond range but when it comes to safety milliseconds count.

Mitsubishi has always been good about preventing, catching and jumping on safety issues so i give them an A+ for jumping on this and choosing not to cover it up for eight years while racking up 13 deaths like Toyota and GM have in the past.

It appears this recall affects my 2012 i-MiEV (November 4, 2011 - May 8, 2012). I have not received a "Service Campaign Information" from Mitsubishi regarding this recall yet. I checked the Mitsubishi Owners website and the NHTSA website using my VIN for this impact sensor recall but neither showed my vehicle as being affected. I'll have to do a bit more research and share this information with other owners.

    Thanks,
    Dave

    Hello,

I just got the safety recall letter for the SRS issue.

Last year, I had a factory service after a SRS warning light came on due to a faulty sensor. They mention that they will cover repairs of past SRS faults and now I wonder whether this recall is due to the same problem, or whether there is a new issue with the car.

Here is how the letter looks like

So only very early '14s? I think the GF's was made in February of '14, so it should be okay. I already told her to look for a recall notice in the mail, and she seemed worried.

Thanks for posting the specifics, Metro!

Yep, confirmed, my blue one is affected by the recall. Got the letter in the mail recently.
