I just received a set of Dunlop Winter Maxx (Made in Japan) tires from Tire Rack. Hopefully they'll work as good as the last set of Continentals I had in Germany. Good to see the Nokian tires are available too.

I am really considering putting 195/60/14 on my 14x6 38mm off set. I got 185/60/14 and the rim got a bit scratched since there is not enough tire wall. Any thoughts?

This is for a '13 base FIT w/ a 5 speed auto and 4 General Altimax RT43 ( H-rated ) A/S set @ 35 . Driving was slight / gradual inclines on state , town , and village roads with about 20 stops . Filled the car before trip with VALERO 91 w/o E . These tires are equal or a tad better than the Bridgestone Ecopia EP422 ( H-rated ) a Low Rolling Resistance tire that are on the '11 base FIT with a 5 speed auto . The 422s' ride is a bit harsh while the 43s' are smoother . Both have 175/65-15 tires . I'd use the RT43s' on a Mirage making for better handling , ride and a low noise level without taking much of a hit on the F.E.. Maybe that'll happen eventually . Waiting on the sedan .

You realize that the first number in tire sizes refers to the width of the tread that's in contact with the road, right? The second number relates to the sidewall of the tire. If you want more sidewall "meat" between the contact tread and the rim, you need to get a 65, 70, or 75 series tire. 185 65 14, 185 70 14. The larger the middle number, the more sidewall you have. Maybe you mean you are indeed wanting a wider tire, so you have a bit of a tire lip or overlap to protect the rim? If so, my apologies for sounding "preachy". The "not enough tire wall" thing is what I was addressing.

Good luck finding anything in 195 width R14. Choice is very limited.

Discount Tire just outfitted me with GTR Champiro Ice Pro 175/65R14 for $56/tire so you can add that to the list.

You'll find the "Cheap chinese tires from wal-mart" are made in the US. I know the Douglas Xtra-Trac tires I had on my Metro were made in the US, and they were $42 each.

    Back to the topic...

I'm thinking about some 175/65R14's for my mirage. I'd also consider 185/60R14. Will either of those tires fit the stock steel 4.5" wide rims? Or do I need to go snag four 6" wide 14" wheels from an old civic? (I have access to a powdercoating setup, I could powdercoat them...)

We are running 185/60R14 RT43 on stock steel rims without any issues. I like 185/60 more as it is closer in diameter, less speedo error.

RT43 is probably best bet: cheap, widely available, good grip and handling for non-performance tire, rated top 5 for category at TireRack. They are not LRR but not bad had been rated better than average in rolling test by Customer Report. 185/60 H rated at 51psi max, so at 48/42 psi they roll.

Only complaints they took really long time to break in ~3,000mi, so if there is no issue with alignment they likely go more than 60K warranty. Also at 38-42 psi they are squirmy, more than they would have been with wider rim.

Incorrect. It actually measures the width of the widest parts of the sidewalls, called section width. This number can actually change depending on the rim width used. Tread width is a separate measurement and varies within the same size tire.

The second number measures the sidewall profile as a percentage of section width.
