I have seen tests done in Denmark, where they used an opel car with downsized engine with turbo against a mazda with big engine. The downsized engine claims better fuel efficiency but in real world test the big engine from mazda got better gas mileage. Their concept works great. Keep in mind that they achived good gas mileage with a lot of hp! although their diesel engine suck, they claim it has high compression(15:1) where as an old diesel engine from 2006 has more than 18:1 compression hahaha. They only made a better gas engine...

There were a few similar tests in US which found SkyActiv be better in real life than downsized turbocharging.
With DFI engine I'd worry about intake valve build up. Ford has this issue, not sure if Mazda will. Mitsubishi was a pioneer of DFI but GDI isn't what they are now, that engine had some long term longevity issue.

People need to realize its how they drive their car that affects fuel economy the most. I think a Prius going around a track gets worse gas mileage than an EVO.

But I thought the concept would be better. A width of 1.35 m, a height of 1.6 m and 0.29 Cd is not what I expected. Combined with a Kei-Car motor with only 64 Nm and 43 bhp I think the gearbox has a rather short transmission ratio.
Of course 2.64 l/100 km at 70 kph might be slightly better than about 3.0 l/100 km of a Space Star at 70 kph. But the Space Star has a better Cd of 0.27 and is practical for everyday use. I would not want my passenger to sit behind me and really like the cuddly atmosphere in my Daihatsu Cuore with Kei-Car dimensions (1.475 m wide) in combination with a powerful 1.0 liter engine (12.2 seconds 0-62 mph, 58 bhp ).
Why not bring a real Kei-Car (like a Daihatsu) to Europe again and to the USA with a 1.0 liter engine (like the Daihatsu/Toyota 1KR-FE with a compression ratio of 12.5)? Fuel consumption would be better about 10-20 % compared to the Space Star/Mirage and the cars have plenty of space inside, more than a Fiat 500, Smart or Mini. Just look at the Daihatsu Mira e:S interiour.
The 2007 Daihatsu Cuore is still the most fuel efficient car with a conventional gasoline engine and an average fuel consumption of 4.8 l/100 km in Germany. The Space Star 1.0 has a fuel consumption of 5.0 l/100 km at the moment, the 1.2 needs 5.1 l/100 km.
