It's chain-driven. Noticeably much more clattery at startup compared to our Daihatsu Charade's belt-driven three-banger too.

It is chain driven, remove the oil filler cap and you will see it.

A chain may be a bit noisier, but has lower overall maintenance costs than a belt, I suppose. I wonder if there's an efficiency reason for going with a chain vs. belt though.
I also wonder if this is an interference engine.
