I think asphalt bleeding into foam will result into burnt-like effect. BTW, what's the base of your sound deadening material - asphalt or rubber butyl?

What does the black mark smell like? Does it smell like smoke?

It's not a burn, just rubbing of the wire mesh at the bottom of the foam padding that is contacting the surface of the asphalt based sound deadening material. The wire mesh is there so the seat can be held in place. Do I have to take a photo of my rear seat bottom to convince you it is a non issue?

    regards
    mech

heres a closer pic, mine doesnt have a wire mesh.

if you take a closer look the foam looks it melts due to heat. if its only rubbing at the bottom patch i think it wouldnt only be on this part but might as well with the other parts of the foam. BTW i dont see any mesh your saying under the foam. my is directly touching the bottom metal.

AFAIK, asphalt bleeds into foam, discolors it and eventually melt it.

See the foam of my seat.. butyl rubber stuck on it but no burnt marks..

I bought Acoustipad and installed in one door only just for observation. I found the door to be hotter to touch under the sun than without it. So, I cancelled installation for the other doors. I read the specs of Dynamat and Hushmat and preferred the Hushmat. I ordered 1-box of Hushmat at Amazon.
