You are right, its nothing new. I bought a CJ7 used with a bunch of emission controls and other items removed. I began to restore these items, including the intake air heater hose. Cheap to repair, big difference in operation. That 258 warmed up much faster with that back on - super nice in the winter. If I recall, it's damper was pneumatically operated and controlled by engine temperature alone.
