    I kick the shifter to Ds all the time for braking and to keep rpm above 1200 for fuel cutoff economy. I use L more than I thought I would as well for the same reason.
    As for the air cond anchor I use the auto climate control so mine is on all the time but I don't feel it drags the car down that much.
    Will weld for beer.

    No regenerative value for down shifting other than engine braking. I down shift all the time into "B" instead of riding the brakes.

    Downshifting...

    My Mirage has no braking even at 6000rpm. At all. Its comical actually. I can throw 3rd gear doing 120km/h and not even feel it pull back. Heck 1st barely does it. Stupid modern low friction tiny engine.

    Surprising enough with the CVT dowshifting into "B" does have a very noticeable effect.

    Yes it does.. and if you're in the 60 - 70km/h range it sometimes shifts to low range and slows the car too much.
