Swiss long-distance record for Space Star 1.2: 3,38 l/100 km! (69.6 mpg US)

Swiss airline pilot Felix Egolf is a 'hyper miler' in his spare time. He managed to drive 1111 kilometers in a Mitsubishi Space Star on one tank (37,65 l). That resulted in an amazing 3,38 l/100 km!

He drove from Luzern to Härkingen via Arlberg, Salzburg, Allgäu and Zug in a Space Star 1.2, with the car's AS&G (auto stop and go) engaged. He completed the trip in twenty hours with an average speed of 55 km/h.

The 'hyper milers' try to set records for the fuel consumption of new vehicles, their aim is to beat the factory measurements. Felix Egolf says he uses a few simple techniques:

    - Look ahead and keep enough distance,
    - Take your foot off the accelerator when possible (engine fuel cut, no consumption),
    - Allow yourself enough time for the trip,
    - Shift to a higher gear a.s.a.p,
    - Glide, don't hurry.

Previously, Egolf managed a record for fuel consumption with the Mitsubishi ASX 1.8 diesel (3,2 l/100 km).

Very impressive. I'm guessing he drove a manual transmission Mirage?

talldino - thanks a lot for posting that! Impressive achievement.

FYI, that converts to 69.59 MPG (US) for our American friends.

It's nice to get more data that's in line with some of the other dedicated long distance economy run results we've seen, eg:

    Mirage economy run Thailand: 31.9 km/L (3.1L/100km, 75 mpg US) 5-spd

I guess it was a manual, mister Egolf advises us to 'shift to a higher gear asap'. And I remember vaguely that they don't sell the CVT in Switzerland.

Hmmm.. It seems that the mirage has a larger tank than expected? Supposedly 35 liters but he used more than 37.

For record breaking trips its not uncommon to be able to fit more gas into a tank than the rated capacity.

True - and the tank capacity doesn't include the volume in the filler neck - and 2L is a reasonable guess for that.

Hypermilers in competitions often fill up literally to the brim to ensure they're going from "full" to "full" in order to make their fuel consumption calculations accurate.
