Question Safety recall, ECU flashed, why?

    Hello,

I've just gone through another safety recall for my Mirage. About two weeks ago, I had my SRS sensor issue fixed when another safety recall letter reached me for new action. This time it was about the corrosion of the SRS connector

However, they also flashed my ECU (C1602A flash campaign) and obviously I am now curious why this was necessary and what changes it brought about?

    Any guesses?

I read somewhere that the ECM is being reflashed because it is giving the engine too much fuel at cold start, and this is causing an engine knock and a decrease in mpg until it warms up.

My girlfriend's '14 DE is going in for both of these recalls today. As far as recalls go, these are very minor.

Honda just recalled 30,000+ new '16 Civics with the 2.0 engine because these engines might grenade themselves...

I think Cobrajet is correct. Curious myself. I'm going to ask the dealership when I drop the car off.

thx for the insight. This should improve fuel economy, which is good news.

Curious if the OPs car would hold a high idle on cold start to warm up faster? Reason I ask is that upon cold start my car sits at normal idle speed and never holds higher revs like most cars.

The fast idle is determined by the ECM, and it depends on ambient air conditions. Your car isn't going to fast-idle as high if the temps are 70 than it would if it were -10.

Now that you mention it, I've seen that a couple of times that the engine was idling just below 2000 RPM after a cold start. I wanted to post this on mirageform.com but forgot about it. Weirdly enough, I haven't seen (or don't remember) that behavior when I lived in Maryland, where the temperatures were lower than in CA.

I just got a recall notice for C1602A and it says that they will either flash the ECU or replace the engine - quite a continuum there!

I just got back from having the kick panel connector recall and the ECU flash. I asked the tech, and he said what Cobrajet says - too much fuel in the engine on startup. Which is probably why mine clatters when you first start it. I'll see if it's quieter tonight after work.

Just got my 48,000 km service done.
Both the ECM flash and the kick panel connector recall were done as well as new washer nozzle on driver side (on warranty).
Dealer couldn't really explain what ECM flash was for but I have not noticed any difference in cold start rpm since it was done.
Now that I know what to look for I'll pay closer attention.

    Will weld for beer.
