    2 years later ...

    After purchasing my 2014 Mirage ES CVT, I changed the engine oil to conventional for break-in, and drove it fast and hard for the first 3,000 miles. Oil was also changed a couple of times during that 3,000 miles - I didn't want all those glittery metal fragments circulating in the engine!

    In the past year, I've settled on running conventional PYB 5W-30 along with a Wix or Wix rebranded oil filter.

    Engine's purring, no oil burning issues at all, and I'm easily averaging 52+ mpg combined, with ~90% city and ~10% highway driving.

    I'm running full synthetic 5w-30 here on the Oregon Coast with a Hastings LF486 filter. Never gets cold here, never gets hot either. Upper 40's, low 50's during the winter, Upper 60's, low 70's during the summer.

    How's the synthetic 5W-30 working for you?

    Since I'm sticking with a 6 month oil change schedule (~2,500+ mi) to stay in the terms of the warranty, I figure it's not worth using synthetic.

    @CookieMonster,

    Glad it is working out for you but I would not feel comfortable myself to completely buck the instructions from the manufacturer (ref: soft break in)

    Good, I buy the Federated Auto Parts Full Synthetic 5w-30 Dexos1. It's $5.00 a quart and manufactured by Amalie Oil Co. Here is a link to the specs. Much less valve train noise.

    A lot of people claim the pyb to be just about as good as a synthetic blend. Very good oil for the price!

    Yep, it's not bad when I can get 3 qts of PYB for <10 total.
