So far, so good - Averaging 4.1 to 4.7 l/100km (51-57 mpg US)

I only have 300 km on my Mirage so far, but so far my averages have been pretty good.

For my 19.5 km commute to work I got 4.1L/100km. There is a 5 km stretch of highway on the way there. I take an alternate route without highway on the way back. Speeds average 60 to 70 km/h city and 100 km/h on the highway.

I ran in to a fair bit of traffic on the way back, but still ended up at 4.7L/100km. Not bad for my first tank.

The MID is predicting that I will hit around 770 km on this tank.

My goal is to average 4.0L/100km, but I don't know if that's possible without Engine Off coasting, which I'm not a fan of.

I'd say that is pretty darn good! Just wait until everything fully breaks in and you get a bit more situated with the car. You'll see that go up even further as well as once summer temps start going up too.

Conversion for MPG fans: that's 51-57 mpg US.

Pretty ideal speeds for good fuel economy. Lucky you.

I'd say it's doable. Even if you don't stop the engine while coasting, kill it at stops of more than 10 seconds (when safe to do so), and it'll make a difference.

Ya, just came back from dropping my wife off. 18.4 km there ending at 4.1 L/100km then 22.4 km back via a different route. Trip total ended up at 3.8 L/100km (61.9 MPG). Just keeps getting better and better.

    I can't wait until it's "broken in".

That is great for a car so new. This weather as well as major traffic jams has been killing my mileage. I am usually around 30mpg when it is cold out and combined with the traffic. On Monday I was at 20mpg because there was so much traffic and stop and go. When there is no traffic and it is warm out I am usually at around 40-46mpg on my ride to work.

    Uugh, traffic!

4.0L/100km (58.8MPG) on the way to work today.
5.2L/100km (45.2MPG) on the way back!!! I ran into bad traffic. Tried an alternate route and ran into more traffic.

It was slow moving traffic, so I couldn't even turn my engine off.

It doesn't look like you've started a fuel economy log yet on the site. Pretty handy to keep track. A few of us also track our fuel usage on http://www.fuelly.com so others can see how we're kicking everyones else's butts on fuel economy.

Ya, I've been using Fuelly for a while. I have my Lancer and CBR125 on there.

I'm still on my first tank. I plan to enter it here once I have to fill it up.

First tank ended up netting me 4.5 L/100km (52.8 MPG). The MID B average was 4.9 L/100km before I reset it, but that would have included 30 km before I got it plus whatever idling the dealership did. The dealership filled the tank when I purchased the car.

    ***

On a different note, I'm not very impressed with the highway fuel economy when travelling above 100 kph (62 mph). I took my Mirage up Island to go Snowboarding over the weekend.

The speed limit for the first 140 km (87 mi) was 80-90 kph (50-56 mph) and I was able to keep it around 4.2 L/100km 56 (mpg). After that the speed limit increases to 120 kph (75 mph) - the fastest in Canada, for the next 65 km (40 mi).

I attempted to go 120 kph (75 mph), but my mileage quickly started climbing, so I kept it around 100 kph (62 mph) - 20 kph below the speed limit. It still ended up climbing to 4.5 L/100km (52 mpg) by the time I got to my destination. Without a Scangauge I don't know what the fuel rate was when travelling at 120 kph, but I'm guessing between 5 & 6 L/100km (39 to 47 mpg).

Unlike most gasoline only cars it seems that the Mirage has better fuel economy in the city (like a Hybrid).

This is to be expected from such short car. Similar sized and with similar Cd Prius C was getting 38.3mpg in similar situation at 73mph.

There are some aerodynamic mods can be done but don't expect more than 5% improvement. It is just the nature of the beast: it is hard to make short car aerodynamically efficient.
