I find that the MID is surprising accurate considering the technology involved. In my case it is usually within 2% of the actual. Individual fill-ups are not very accurate because it is impossible to fill the tank to exactly the same level. I only look at the average of the last 5 fill-ups. Please don't be mad at your Mirage!

I agree with this and also average out the MID-B error.

Ya, I know it should average out in the end. It's just very frustrating when it showed 3.9 (60MPG), I was hoping for closer to 3.8 (62MPG) and it ended up 10% higher at 4.3 (55MPG).

On average I end up around 3.5 L/100km (67MPG) for my trip to work and 3.9 L/100km (60MPG) on the way back - 50km/31mi round trip.

In this part of the world, fuel is charged at what it volume it would have at a certain referenced temperature. This is because the physical volume of fuel greatly varies with temperature. The computerized pumps are supposed to calculate the differences, created by differences in fuel temperature. The meter should get adjusted accordingly.

Unfortunately cheating is frequent in Europe.
The standard test procedure calls for the filling of a 20 Litre vessel, the contents analyzed later.
Experience shows it is wise to put in 20Litres at the most at one time, because when you fill up more than 20 Litres you very likely will get short cheated!
For example: In Luxemburg, at probably the largest station in the country, I filled it up and the pump registered 37Litres, but my tank had not even been empty! My brother in law got charged for 48Litres, but his wasn't empty either, and has a 45Litre tank.

BTW, The International Standards Organisation ISO was established in the 1860's to put an end to medieval measurements, and its hard to comprehend the word didn't get around...

I have seen stickers on fuel pumps saying "volume corrected to 15 C" and assumed it was a Canadian national standard, but apparently it's not!

In Canada, the use of automatic temperature compensation (ATC) is optional on gasoline and diesel fuel pumps, but is mandatory for the sale of propane as an automotive fuel.
