    warranty work: heater core replaced

    NOTICE TO ALL:::

    I just got my 2014 ES 5-speed back from the dealer; it had a leak in the heater core. 46K miles. The dealer says its the 1st one they've had to replace, and hopes its not a sign of things to come. Me too. My car still smells like antifreeze though.

    I've heard of another forum member here who had a radiator leak, but I think this is the first heater core leak I've heard of. Glad they took care of it for you.

    Thanks for sharing this.

    I hope it is indeed fixed; I still smell antifreeze. I wonder how long it takes for the smell to go away.

    Should be gone Monday. I would check for leaks or anything fresh, wet and smelling like antifreeze in these next several days just ta be on the safe side, sunsetjim.

    When the engine is cold mark the coolant level on the recovery bottle. Check the mark daily before you start the car up the first time. Any drop in level compared to your mark, of any significance (say .5 inch 20mm) and you still have a leak. Back to the dealership if the level drops over a couple of weeks. No drop in a month, no leak.

    regards

    I wonder how tough the core is to replace on these? On some cars, it is as easy as unhooking the two hoses going into the core on the firewall, removing an access panel under the dash, and sliding the core out like a cassette coming out of a VCR.

    On other cars, the entire dash has to come out.

    I think you are smelling the coolant that is soaked into the carpet on the right front floor board.

    When the heater core leaks on the mirage it tends to drain out of the HVAC case onto the right front carpet.

    This is based on the two mirages we had at the shop for this issue! And your case is the first on this forum I heard of.

    The second of the two mirages we had was not obviously leaking like the first one (which was dumping) but you could smell it and swipe a finger on the carpet and get slime (coolant) on the fingertips. So it had to been slowly dripping on it.

    And yes both were 14s like your car. (and mine darn it)

    I would check the carpet and if it still has residual coolant in it,see if it could be cleaned somehow to get rid of the smell!

    @Cobrajet: Yes the entire dash has to come out to get the HVAC case out and then the heater core can slide out to the left.

    Are you having problems with yours?

    Looks like all three were located in the US South.
