    6,650 Mile Oil Catch Can Results.

    I've had my homemade oil catch can in place for approximately 6,650 miles and wanted to present my results. I have used Mobil 1 0W-20 the entire time without an oil change and have witnessed a drop in oil level equivalent to about 1-2milimeters on the oil dip stick. I see lots of highway driving at or above 4K rpm.

    The total oil consumption and amount of captured blowby seems reasonable and I am not concerned. I will however keep my catch can in place just to keep the intake and top end nice and clean.

    I collected about 47ml (1.25 oz) of oil.

    Here is my set up. I am using a slightly modified water/air separator typically used in air pumps and I have it attached to the windshield wiper fluid reservoir.

    Once I get to 15K miles on the same oil I will do a blackstone UOA and present those results as well.

    EDIT - I am using Mobil 1 0w-20 Extended Performance.

    If that's all that came through the PCV system after 6600 miles - especially on an engine that is always spinning so fast thanks to gearing - I think your engine is quite tight!

    Would be interested to see how the M1 0w-20 goes - it's a good oil that usually has no problems with those type of intervals. Mirage does have a small capacity ... but it is a small engine too. Less moving parts.

    I'd have to agree, that sounds pretty good considering you're crusing at 4k rpm!

    I am thinking about getting a kit too. Which one did you get and how much are they for?

    I used this one - http://www.harborfreight.com/38-in-c...ter-68230.html but the inlet/outlet connectors are different on mine, mine are designed to accept rubber hose.

    I have 9mm fuel hose from the PCV to catch can inlet. This hose was snug on the PCV nipple but I used a hose clamp to tighten it further.

    From PCV outlet I have 9mm fuel line, a plastic reducer, then 1/4''ID fuel line connecting to the intake nipple. The 1/4'' line is very very snug on the intake nipple and is hard to get on and off.

    The reason for 9mm hose(s) is due to the size of the catch can connections.

    If you buy this catch can remember that it was meant to be used under pressure, not vacuum, so the drain valve in the bottom might not seal properly under vacuum. I used high temp silicone to seal the valve.

    I also slightly modified the filter itself - PM me if interested in the details.

    Woah ... Pat Goss is a bit off about why DI engines carbon the intake valves.

    It's not, specifically, blowby .. .and blowby is absolutely not caused by direct injection.

    The problem is, direct injection engines just don't wash the intake valves with a solvent (gasoline).

    Low tension piston rings are a problem (espeically for Subaru) and that does lead to some oil consumption, but low tension rings will cause the oil to end up in the combustion chamber, not go through the PCV system.
