    Air Intake & Resonator Rattle

I noticed increasing rattling/roaring from the engine which -interestingly- was a bit worse when the engine was warm. Taking a close look and touching here and there under the hood, I found that grabbing the air cleaner body made the rattling disappear. It was caused by the air intake duct hitting a wire wrap (from which nothing good could come in the long run) and 3 loose fittings in the air cleaner body that allowed it to shake like a maracca:

With the resonator out, you can see that the shaking problem was mitigated in the assembly line by sticking some padding to the air intake duct connection, but the normal engine vibration has worn it down (38K miles), as well as the plastic in the air intake, resonator duct and their corresponding fittings in the air cleaner body. The wear is deeper than what it seems in the photos:

My admittedly crappy fix was to add a few layers of electrical tape around the loose joints:

I had this problem, too. I made a zip-tie lasso from the snorkel to the alternator bolt to keep it snug against the resonator. I also noticed that the washer on the resonator bolt is getting very worn. That 3-cyl wobble!

Yeah, all that washer does practically is prevent the resonator from falling off the engine as it holds it very lax.

All engines vibrate some, but some type of rubber sleeve connecting two plastic parts together would have been an improvement over this.

I simply removed mine completely. Gained power and 5+mpg with it off the car

You removed the snorkel only or also the resonator?

The entire assembly, I tried a variation keeping the resonator, and still had the lower MPG, so its all gone. I do use a shorter bolt from the bumper to fill the bolt hole in the valve cover since the resonator bolt is like 2" long haha

Do you hear more noise without the assembly?

Yes, it is a bit noisier, but not crazy loud. Gives the car a nice growl to it
