I worry that they would mess up intake sensors.

MetroMPG did some testing years ago with a K&N filter. You can check out the results here:

Testing a 'performance' air filter for MPG
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

I have a K&N in mine, but not for MPG. If it flows better at WOT, good, but I mostly got it because it's washable, so I never have to buy another filter again.

I like the k&n but I think it will take a ton of miles to justify it where I live. I'm at 53k miles original air filter and it looks fine. The 1.2L mirage is a tiny engine, the air filter it comes with is huge, it will take forever to clog up that stock filter. I might change it when it appears to be dirty, who knows I might get 100K from a oem filter. I'll try to take a pic of it when I refuel today, every other fill up I pull the filter out and give it a few bangs against the front support.

In my subjective opinion our filter is significantly oversized for out tiny little engines and I can't imagine a clean OEM filter could ever be a constriction point. On an FRS/BRZ forum I follow the exact same power was made with no filter. I suspect the same to be true with ours. Many drivers will probably never change that filter and it's designed for those extreme situations.

I used to use a K&N filter in my Saturn. There was talk on the Saturn forum I was on that the K&N filters allowed more air in, and therefore more dirt, leading to additional engine wear. Spooked me, so I went back to paper filters.
