Mirage is cheapest new car to own/run in Australia, NZ (RACV/RACQ/NRMA)

Two recently announced Australian studies put the Mirage and Suzuki Alto (pictured) head to head at the top of the lowest "total cost of ownership" competition.

Update - Oct 10: A third study (by NRMA) again names Mirage as the cheapest car to own.

Update - Dec 9: A fourth study (NZ Government) has also found the Mirage to have the lowest cost of ownership (see post #6)

Mirage's closest competitor for cost of ownership, Suzuki Alto

In one study, the Alto edged out the Mirage and took the crown as "cheapest new car to own" in Australia ... by just over $3 a week, based on calculations/estimates made by the Royal Automobile Club of Queensland (RACQ).

But a separate survey showed that Mirage was slightly less expensive to own when actual owners were surveyed by the Royal Automobile Club of Victoria (RACV) looking at "real world" results.

The estimated study by RACQ takes into account:

    • List Price
    • Depreciation
    • Interest on Loan
    • Registration, insurance, licence
    • Fuel
    • Tyres
    • Service / Repairs

Vehicles with all engine/fuel types are considered in the ranking: including petrol (gasoline), diesel, LPG, hybrid and electric vehicles.

    Best 3 cars weekly costs:

    • Suzuki Alto GL manual ($113.82 per week)
    • Mitsubishi Mirage ES manual ($117.31)
    • Holden Barina Spark manual ($119.58)

You can see the whole report here: http://www.racq.com.au/motoring/cars...ing_costs_2013

However, the RACV owner survey found..

The Mirage ES took the crown with an average weekly cost of $112.81, a 0.50c drop over last year's winner – the Suzuki Alto – which again performed strongly by finishing a close second ($113.31).
In the owner survey the Barina Spark came in at 116.47, and the VW Up at 124.07.

Very nice find Metro. This confirms what we've been thinking about the car for a while. It should be even more true in the US market where there is no Alto and also a lack of small inexpensive cars.
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

Another article about Mirage being cheapest to run in Australia:

    Competition cuts small-car running costs

Every aspect of owning and running a car in WA is taken into account, including the purchase price, depreciation, insurance, registration, servicing, tyres, fuel and the interest on loan repayments. It also assumes that the vehicle has travelled 15,000km during the course of the year.

    ...

The Mitsubishi Mirage was considered the cheapest, with a drive-away price of $15,730 and running costs of $108.67 a week.
The Holden Barina came in second and the Suzuki Alto, which was the previous winner last year and in 2011, was third.

Yet another study names Mirage as cheapest to own/run

Australia's National Roads and Motorists' Association (NRMA) has joined the party, naming Mirage as the new car with the lowest ownership costs.

In their study, the Mirage comes in at $92/week. Second place goes to the Holden Barina Spark (Chevrolet Spark in other countries) at $96/wk.

Here are the costs taken into consideration:

The NRMA report considered the car’s Compulsary Third Party insurance cost, fuel, servicing, registration, maintenance, repairs, roadside membership and depreciation costs. It was based on a driver who travels 15,000km annually over a period of five years.

NZ government report recognizes Mirage too

Lowest ownership cost in category: Government report

A further significant recognition of Mitsubishi’s hatchback followed a meticulous assessment by the New Zealand Government procurement team.

In a long-running evaluation programme the agency scrutinised competitive vehicles in a number of categories to establish the total cost of ownership (TCO) of each, objective information that Government departments can use to get best value for money as well as the latest technology and safety features.

“The study found that in its category - ‘sub-compact petrol-powered auto hatchback’- Mirage LS has a lower TCO than any other vehicle assessed”, said Daniel Cook.
