Suzuki Celerio 1.0L, overall winner in the gasoline category.

Several newer models on the market are giving the 1.2L Mirage a run for its money in the fuel economy department.

The Philippines Department of Energy recently conducted an on-road comparison of 70 car & truck models under ideal, controlled highway conditions (ie. not really representative of "real world" driving). However, being the Philippines, one rule stated the AC had to be on at all times.

    • each car filled to the brim, driven through the course, and fueled again
    • each manufacturer brought their own driver and co-driver tandem, who along with a media observer
    • 280-kilometer course with a maximum speed of 80 km/h (50 mph)
    • air conditioner at full blast
    • three-second gap to the car ahead and no overtaking
The top gasoline car was the 1.0L Suzuki Celerio CVT.

The Mirage CVT ranked behind several larger displacement gasoline direct-injection models from Honda & Hyundai.

    The overall winner was a diesel powered Isuzu D-Max 3.0 L 4×2 pickup RWD 5 MT which scored an astonishing 38.46 km/L = 91 mpg US = 2.6 L/100 km.

    Top gasoline vehicles:

    1) 29.14 km/L = 69 mpg US = 3.43 L/100 km - Suzuki Celerio 1.0 L gas hatchback FWD CVT

    2) 28.60 km/L = 67 mpg US = 3.5 L/100 km - Honda Jazz 1.5 L gas hatchback FWD CVT

    3) 27.94 = 66 mpg US = 3.6 L/100 km - Suzuki Ciaz 1.4 L gas sedan FWD 5 MT

    4) 27.83 = 66 mpg US = 3.6 L/100 km - Hyundai Elantra 1.6 L gas sedan FWD 6 MT

    5) 27.70 = 65 mpg US = 3.6 L/100 km - Suzuki Celerio 1.0 L gas hatchback FWD 5 MT

    6) 27.56 = 65 mpg US = 3.6 L/100 km - Honda Civic 1.5 L gas sedan FWD CVT

    7) 27.05 = 64 mpg US = 3.7 L/100 km - Mitsubishi Mirage 1.2 L gas hatchback FWD CVT

    (The Mirage 5-speed turned in a 25.64 km/L result.)

This is impressive, however it makes me wonder how much difference does .27L/100kms make over the lifetime of a vehicle?

Say you get 300,000kms on the life of your car-

    That's 3,000 x 100kms.

    3,000 x .27 L = 810 L of fuel...over the lifetime.

So add $810 (at most) on to the purchase price of all those 7 cars and see who the REAL winner is!

I think the air conditioning of the Space Star/Mirage is really inefficient. At 35 °C my Space Star has an average fuel consumption of over 4 l/100 km with running air conditioning and under 3 l/100 km without air conditioning. Today I reached an average fuel consumption of 2.7 l/100 km on my way back from work at 25-30 °C.

I really can´t believe the Isuzu D-Max 3.0 L 4×2 pickup RWD 5 MT can reach a fuel consumption of 2.6 l/100 km. I drove a Mitsubishi Outlander 2.0 AWD diesel last year and I think it is really impossible to reach less than 4 l/100 km with a car like this.

Over all I don´t think this test is really meaningful...

Simply unrealistic in real-life driving, but Suzuki Celerio is really hard to beat iin fuel economy even with its non-VVTI engine variant.

Hard to believe the Honda Fit (Jazz) would best the Mirage. I owned a Fit, and while it got great milage considering peppy the car was, it averaged no more than 35MPG (a CVT). The Mirage (a manual) is getting no less than 43.

Which of these cars (other than the Mirage) are available in the United States with the listed engine? I don't think there's a 1.6 Elantra in the US. And I didn't even know Suzuki still made cars.

@Topfuel - The Jazz is the Fit in the US and I have no reason to believe the 1.5 liter engine sold in other countries is significantly different than the one in the US. There is certainly nothing different enough to make it best a Mirage (in terms of fuel economy)
