Unhappy Annoying Mileage Discrepancy (lower MPG in new Mirage vs. old Mirage)

Last August I bought a new 2015 Mirage DE. I was consistently getting 40+ MPG until a drunk driver hit me an totaled it. I wanted the same exact car as a replacement and found a new 2015 Mirage ES which came with an upgraded stereo and cruise control ( which I never use) Other differences are wheels, the new ones are aluminum I think the old ones were plastic covers.. Other than that its exactly the same car but im barely getting 35 mpg consistently. I drive 600 miles a week 99 percent freeway driving. I do of course get better mileage driving down from 4000ft on the mountain then I do on the way back up but the average going uphill seems to be way worse than the other car. Something feels different with the transmission. It runs at higher rpms longer on the uphill than the other car did. Granted its only an additionl 20 or 30 bucks a month in gas but its incredibly annoying.

Was your original Mirage a 5 speed?

How many miles on the ES? These motors require a couple thousand miles to 'break in'.

Sorry to hear this. Try checking the air pressure in your tires. Many here who are concerned with fuel economy make this the first thing to check, and some inflate to the max pressure listed on the tire's sidewall to reduce rolling resistance. When I bought mine new from the dealership, all four tires were underinflated, and my fuel economy improved considerably when I aired them up.

Also check that you are using 0-20W motor oil.

    Good luck.

Maybe the alignment? Does it "roll" as freely in neutral as your first Mirage? Factory tires on both? I had previously only driven automatics, but neither my previous Saturn nor my wifes Accent maintain speed in neutral like my Mirage does.

I think this has something to do with the curb weight. The ES is heavier than the DE model.

Ah that could be and might explain the slightly more sluggish uphill performance where it doesn't seem to upshift as early as the DE did.

Same tires. I do know that this was the last of two black 2015 mirages left in the entire state of California and the dealer found it and had it sent to sacramento and it arrived in very dirty condition. must have been sitting somewhere neglected for a long time, but it was new with only 65 miles on it. They cleaned it up nice but maybe its out of alignment.?
In any case if the ES is really heavier than the DE then that could explain it although they advertise the 40mpg + on both models right?
