    Oil specs for MT

    Hi folks,
the FSM and the owners manual says
"Fill with MITSUBISHI MOTORS NEW MULTI GEAR OIL ECO API GL-4, SAE 75W-80"
but it does not say any more about the oil at all.

Question: Can anyone confirm that the correct MT oil part number is MZ 312644?

    Helmut

Yup a few of us are on the redline 75w80.

I highly recommend a magnetic drain plug replacement. Both transmission fluid changes I've done I've cleaned a significant amount of metal off my drain plug, I on average grind gears 5-10 times in 30,000 miles.

The new MTF for Mitsubishi Eco cars is not yet available in the Philippines. Important things to consider in selecting aftermarket MTF replacement are:

    1. Our manual transmission is a sychronized transaxle with non LS differential, MTF properties must be appropriate for the transmission gears, synchronizers, and differential gears.
    2. Viscosity 75w-80 is equivalent to 5w-30 motor oil. Replacement MTF must provide easy flow while not too slippery for efficient synchronizer operation.
    3. It should have approriate EP property that will bring to minimum the wear of transmission and differential gears without eating the synchronizers. Mirage transaxle has a reduced size dimesion to conserve weight with tighter tolerances, this will require a low viscosity MTF with better EP protection than API GL-3 because of increased pressure bearing per unit area, but not API GL-5 to protect the sychronizers against erosion or peeling.
    4. Many modern cars use sychronizer materials that will not tolerate sulfur/phosphorus EP additive, but majority of car manufacturers are silent about it. One crude way to test is by our nose, if there is that nasty sulfur smell in the original factory MTF, or better, have it chemically analyzed. Be sure about it in selecting an aftermarket replacement.
    5. It is best until proven otherwise, to use the Mitsubishi specified MTF, in emergency situation, use a high quality FS 5w-30 diesel motor oil as it will readily pass API GL-4 certification without the sulfur/phosphorus EP additive. Some Mirage owners here in the Philippines, have replaced their original MTF with Diaqueen API GL-4 SAE 75w-85 multigear oil. At the Mitsubishi Thailand website, the MTF change for Mirage is during 100T km mileage.

Almost confirmed, the Mirage MTF EP additive is not sulfur/phosphorus. Opened my MTF fill-hole a while ago and the original fill is almost odorless and watery clear with yellow tinge. The consistensy is very thin like a SAE 20, 3-in-one household lubricant when I squeezed it with my fingers.
