Interesting review, aiming to answer the question about 3 cylinders:

...you really want to know is whether three is enough. Can you really live with just half a six-pack?
In the end he gives the Mirage 3/5 stars, Fiesta 4/5

    Fiesta summary:

    - 1.0T is "a delight"
    - better interior quality

    Mirage summary:

    - greatly improved over previous version, in looks & handling
    - suspension upgrades plus GT wheel & tires made it a "hoot to throw through corners"
    - "underpowered": you have to drive with your foot on the floor to keep up with interstate traffic
    - he only got 30 freakin' MPG!
    - CVT drivetrain drones loudly when pushed

So applause to Mitsubishi for saving the Mirage from ignominy with its affordable, drivable ’17 makeover. At under $18 grand, the Mirage finally belongs in the U.S. market. Just be sure and speak up when you have a passenger — so they can hear you over the leaf blower.
    My counterpoint:

I wonder how many 3-cylinder Fiestas Ford sells each month. I bet it's not even close to the number of new Mirages sold. The reviewer had a hard time finding one to test:

finding a three-cylinder Fiesta ... is harder than finding a four-leaf clover. In these days of under-$3 a gallon gas, 3-cylinders aren’t in favor. I found —appropriately — only three on Metro Detroit dealer lots.

The Fiesta is rated at 48mpg highway?!? Damn the Mirage needs a 6-speed!

I can't get my head around the price of either one of these cars. I still think of my Mirage as a $10K new car, because that's what I paid for it.

Yeah, I dunno where that reviewer is getting his numbers.

The 2016 Fiesta 1.0L manual is EPA rated 43 highway, 31 city, 36 combined. That number will be slightly lower for the 2017 rating.

OK...thanks for pointing that out. 48 sounded way too high.

    Ha. As suspected.

    - There are currently 145 new Fiesta 1.0's listed on cars.com in all of the U.S.

    - There are 6,157 Mirages & G4's.

The Fiesta triple isn't selling anywhere close to Mirage numbers.

Apparently, 'interstate speed' in Detroit is 90 mph! No wonder he had it floored and only got 30 mpg.

It still amazes me that so few supposedly professional reviewers know what a 'city car' is.

For me, the author uses too much hyperbole. The story reads like fiction, or a fantasy novel.

Of all the features he mentions, he doesn't include potential carbon fouling for the Fiesta.

Too bad it wasn't a comparison of manual transmissions.

Yup, CVT vs manual makes this very much an apples to oranges comparison.

    ---

This review prompted me to check my local Ford dealership's website. It says they have both a sedan and hatchback Fiesta 1.0L manual in stock. I've been tempted to drop by and have a look. But I haven't yet. Maybe when I have a few kilometers under my belt in the Mirage sedan I'll drop by.
