Topping off the Mirage G4 gas tank: bottomless pit?

The G4 seems to have a bottomless fuel tank when filling it up.

I picked up the loaner G4 from Mitsubishi yesterday and first thing on my list was to top off the tank and reset the gauges to get an accurate picture of fuel consumption.

In my own car (Firefly/Metro), I normally do a "3-click" top off to try to get it close to the same level each fill for accuracy.

But if I'm trying to calibrate a car's fuel economy gauge to actual fuel consumption, I like to see the fuel in the filler neck for each fill.

With the G4, it kept disappearing. The pump clicked off 10+ times and each time the fuel level disappeared again.

I suspect it was draining into the EVAP line.

Anybody else experienced this? I don't remember this issue on the 2014 Mirage hatch I drove.

On the newer vehicles they suggest stopping on the first click or the second at the very most.

One of my last fill-ups, the fuel dispenser failed to shut off automatically, and some gas spilled over. I didn't take time to notice if the fuel level dropped down the filler neck, as I was busy dealing with the pump and the spill.

    My experience is the same.

I usually hold it to fill manually after it clicks off, really really slowly.

anything over 8 gallons from double flashing is "really full" for a '15 anyway

Interesting. The G4 must be quite different than the hatch. If I try to top off at all after two click offs, it will over flow.

    Thanks for the info guys.

It'll make it harder to calibrate the 2017's MPG gauge against actual fuel used (at least over a small number of fills).

i have a 2014 and am able to fill mine up a full 6-8 L after the first click if I'm at a pump that can pump slow. I always found it strange.

I always stop at the first click for consistency and since the Mirage delivers such good mileage squeezing a couple more liters in doesn't really gain me much.

Yah, but I fill at somewhere around 1/3-1/2 tank left due to significant risk of power outages due to storms & earthquake risk here on the Oregon Coast. Never know here when you might have to endure weeks without power.
