Anyone mind elaborating on what the wheel is attached to to crank inside, on the accessory side with the teeth on it? Looks like a star wheel or crank position sensor pickup wheel or?

That's what I assumed it was.

Is this the guy who blew a head gasket?
Remind us how many miles this engine had on it and the type of maintenance and driving this car has done.

    Great pics!

Interested to know the general conditions observed while tearing the engine down...

    - timing chain stretched/worn?
    - rod and main bearing condition
    - cylinder walls

This teardown was discussed here resulting from a bad head gasket. Rkt Ship had one too.

I've heard about problems with carbon build-up on the valve stems. How did they look on this engine?

This vehicle was towed in with a bad head gasket. I cant remember the mileage, I'm assuming it failed from customer abuse, front end damage and incorrect coolant made me think they might have damaged the radiator leaked out fluid and over heated/ damaged the head gasket. The head and block were both warped beyond correction. Surprisingly there was no damage to the bearings, but the cylinder walls were scuffed badly and there was obvious damage to the pistons.

Yes the toothed wheel is the crank sensor, well not the sensor but the sensor reads off of that wheel.

The valve stems didnt have any build up.

Was the car repaired and put back out on the road?

Just curious, was the warranty used to replace the engine?
