That trick actually does work in some cars...I'm not sure if it would in the Mirage. The Mitsubishi TPMS computer (ETACS) is fairly sophisticated. Here's what the service manual says about how often data is transmitted from each TPMS sensor to the ETACS module...

As soon as the car starts moving, the reading is sent every 15 seconds for 30 transmissions.
Then every 1 minute when the car is moving faster than 25km/hour.
When the car is stationary, the signal is sent once every 13 hours.
I wouldn't be shocked if the Mirage would set a TPMS error when the car starts moving and the ETACS module isn't receiving a signal from the sensors in a spare wheel because they aren't moving.

But if someone has some time on their hands, they can try something similar by sealing a set of Mirage TPMS sensors inside a pressurized length of PCV pipe. This has been a popular trick for people trying to defeat TPMS systems. Search Google with the string "tpms PCV pipe". HERE is one of the more interesting examples of someone doing this.
