Mazda to challenge the Mirage's gas mileage supremacy?

I came across this article that claims that the 2018 Mazda 3 will have a new motor design that will give it hybrid level gas mileage. If this is true, the car likely will exceed the Mirage for gas mileage.

...the second-generation SkyActiv engine “would give the current Mazda3 mileage approaching 30 km per liter, according to estimates.” That’d be 3.3 l/100 km and 70.5 miles per gallon, figures that would put the 2018 Mazda3 at the very top of the compact segment.
Interesting...a gasoline engine that uses compression for ignition instead of spark plugs (like a diesel).

Wow this is pretty cool! I hope mazda can achieve what they are trying to do here. They already have the records for compression over diesel and gasoline engines with the SKYACTIV

    Go Mazda

I'll believe it when I see it.
Besides I've achieved 3.4L/100km in my 2014 CVT Mirage on more than one occasion.
    Will weld for beer.

That and how expensive it will be. The msrp of a base, no options Mazda 3 is right at $18k US. I'm not saying it's not a nice car but if the new engine pushes it closer to $20k US then even if the car got 45 mpg hwy as compared to it's current 37 mpg you could never drive enough miles to offset the extra $5k you spent buying over the price of the Mirage. Yes, the 3 is more powerful, is quieter, handles better but when you look at $$ per mile spent factoring in price and fuel economy the Mirage comes out the winner by far. The Mirage may not be a lot of things, but it is damn reliable, efficient and affordable. Which for me, was exactly what I want. The rest of it (performance, handling, noise, etc..) I could care less.

Of course I bet it comes in closer to 23k. Which is double what I paid for my 17 mirage. Oh, and that duck bill looking hood... Don't care for it on the 3
