Tried my hand at a custom intake

So, I'm not really too certain if it makes more power, but then again, I reset the ECU by pulling the negative battery terminal and just ran it once around the block, but it's definitely louder, and seems to have better throttle response. Over time I suppose I'll see if it has made an improvement over stock.

Used a 12" section of 3" aluminum tube, but had to cut off a couple inches for the filter to clear the hood prop. Also used two silicone reducers, 3"-2" and 3"-2 1/2", with a K&N cone filter with a 2 3/4" flange, and Daox's custom MAF sensor housing. Really cool seeing the 3D printed part!

interesting! I would love to do an intake mod this year. I wonder if it will help a bit with gas mileage.

How is the intake mounted from the mounts? It looks like its 2 metal pieces holding the aluminum part.

Thanks for sharing! I gotta get Daox's maf adapter now!

Looks great! Glad to hear you like the MAF housing.

One thing I would recommend is to rotate the MAF housing so the sensor isn't on the bottom. On the rare chance that there is condensation or something, it will sit and pool by the sensor. If its rotated even 90 degrees its a non issue. The OEM position is horizontal as well.
Custom Mirage products: Cruise control kit, Glove box light, MAF sensor housing, Rear sway bar, Upper grill block

Current project: DIY Nitrous oxide setup for ~$100

I actually had it in backwards somehow when I first put it in, and wondered why it was facing the wrong way, and why the car kept stalling when I tried running it. I currently have it sitting in the same position as the OE housing. One of those things that you miss even though it's staring at you right in the face!

As for the mounts, they are pretty sketch. I took a piece of aluminum bar with a couple holes drilled through it, and used one of the OE intake screws to hold it against the valve cover, while zip ties attach the bar to the tube, because Roadkill.

The second piece of aluminum is to give it a little bit more support at the far end of the intake to keep it from contacting the hood prop, and is secured by zip ties.

It's fully reversible, so I can get everything back to stock for warranty purposes if needed. Currently working on making a heat shield to seal it off from the warm air coming out of the radiator.

    Update:

After installing the intake, I decided to go ahead and also side gap the spark plugs on a whim, and it actually runs surprisingly well now. It actually idles smoother and at a slightly lower RPM, with the GPH staying down to 0.11 at times, when it used to hang around 0.13 and maybe bump 0.12 for a brief moment. I can't say for sure if there's more power at WOT, but it definitely feels more eager and responsive now.

Also added some heat shielding and a duct from the grille towards the filter for a cold air intake, and now intake temps are within 10 degrees of ambient while moving, but in traffic or after a warm start, heat soak raises the temps for a while until you get moving again.
