2014 Mirage price for Canada: $12,498 -- plus $500 rebate offer available

(See also: US Price revealed: $12,995 (2014 Mirage 5-speed) )

Selected bits from an email from Mitsu Canada that just dropped in my in-box...

    The all-new 2014 Mirage -- starting from $12,498*

Canada's newest subcompact car -- the 2014 Mitsubishi Mirage -- can be reserved in advance of its arrival next month.

Reserve now and receive a $500 rebate **

    ---

    * Prices not applicable in Quebec. $12,498 purchase price applies to 2014 Mirage ES. Freight (up to $1,350), $250 in PDI, $100 in air charge, new tire duties, taxes and other government and dealer fees not included. Dealers may sell for less.

    ---

** Place a deposit of $500 or more between August 19, 2013 and September 3, 2013 and take delivery by January 2, 2014, and receive a $500 rebate toward the purchase of the 2014 Mirage. $500 will be deducted after taxes.
The price "advantage" in Canada vs. the US seems to be erased by the higher freight costs here.

Also interesting that the prices aren't applicable in Quebec. I have read that Mitsu expects to do more sales in that province than any other. Canadians like small cars in general, but Quebecers love them the most. I wonder what's up with that. Maybe a regulatory advertising issue.

Hmm, that is interesting. First that its cheaper in Canada (I thought its usually the other way around), but also that Canada is getting a rebate right off the bat, but no word of one in the US.

It's hard to say if it actually is cheaper, given the "up to $1350" in freight. "other government and dealer fees" and "dealer may sell for less". I imagine, as I am always a bit skeptical, that this is mainly a ploy to get people in to the dealership where the sales team can work their magic.

I wouldn't be too surprised if in the future a car like this could be "free", just like the "free" cell-phones (as long as you, for example, pay $200/month +tax for a 7 year service contract).

That's a little extreme, but my point is that the sticker price is only one part of the equation that determines the final, out-the-door price of the car.

Still, at $12 500, it seems reasonable, and the $435 rebate ($500 taken off, after the tax which is 13% here in MB) doesn't hurt.

Yup - 13% HST (harmonized sales tax) in much of Canada (varies by province). Our "free" healthcare ain't free.

    Absolutely right, Canoehead. Many variables.

Which is why I think it would be good idea (was it yours? kalifornia's?) to ask people to post the full details (cost) of their purchase, if they're willing. It might also be a good way to find dealers/individual salespeople who are eager to sell.

Yup, 8% to the Province and 5% to the Feds. I find the auto industry extra confusing though, as it isn't just the math - it is the language/logic of the car seller. I have been reading about buying cars below invoice, which makes no sense if one understands "invoice" to mean what the dealer pays for the car (turns out they pay that, then get various other rebates from the manufacturer). The list of fees, tariffs, and taxes is enough to muddle the brain. Since most cars come with tires, if there is a tire levy that ought to be included, for example. Obviously it isn't in their interests, but it sure would be swell if dealers could take a marker and write "If you want to buy this car today, with cash, your total will be exactly $21 427.33" or "131.19 b/w for 84 months including $2449.25 cost of borrowing, instead of the usual "$89 b/w +taxes and fees". The arithmetic gymnastics required to buy a car are not really difficult, but they are a bit annoying.
