Nissan has dropped a bombshell in the cheap car segment: the 2015 Micra will start at just $9,998. That's $2000 less than its cheapest competitor. Nissan is cancelling the Versa sedan.

Currently, only $150 separates the 3 least expensive cars in Canada. The big difference being Mitsu's $500 introductory rebate.

Though check out the standard equipment differences as well: power windows/locks in either the Spark or Versa, and the Mirage's better sound system.

    None have AC.

Honestly, I could do fine without AC where I live (small city, eastern Ontario -- we only get 3-4 truly hot & humid weeks each summer), or power windows/locks ...

Another comparison item not posted: manufacturer warranty. Mitsu claims the best: 10 yr / 160,000 km limited powertrain.

Also, would be fun to calculate annual fuel cost based on the official fuel economy ratings, to see how long it takes the Mirage to recover the price difference between it & the Spark.

As promised, here are the prices for the Mitsubishi Space Star / Mirage in Germany.

    http://www.mitsubishi-motors.de/space-star/preise/
(the Google translator does an adequate job here, so just try it)

...so the Mirage starts out just under the magical €10.000 barrier and won't break the bank too much at around €15.500 for a fully equipped CVT model. All prices include 19% tax, so for comparison. CVT is an option on all 1.2l models for €1.000.
I've already seen offers for a mid range 1.2l model with CVT just under €12.000 and fully equipped just around €14.000.

Without taxes a Mirage would be just between €7.554 and €13.025 which currently is about USD 10.052 and USD 17.332, with a chance for a rebate of 10-15%.

Compared to other cheap cars, the Mirage isn't all that cheap here... but considering the whole package, it's quite a competitor.

A Dacia (an Romanian manufacturer which works in cooperation with French Renault, using older parts from the Renault stock) Sandero starts at just €6.990 and quickly goes up to €12.500 for the top model, still lacking AT and automatic AC. Also Volkswagen/Seat/Skoda offer quite nice small cars with their Up/Mii/Citigo models they also start at €10.000 and you definitely get a really great interior and material quality, but everything is an extra here. A medium equipped Up with a really, REALLY bad sequential semi-automatic will cost around €14.000... oh you want 4 doors? That's another €480! White or red isn't your kind of color? Lemme have another €455 and we'll fix that. Or maybe you want super-awesome white? That's €870!!

My prediction is, that the average customer here will buy cheap, local (that is European) cars, completely ignoring all the benefits of the Mirage / Space Star. In the low budget small-car segment with manual transmission and low standard equipment, there's just too much competition. Bringing the equipment on par with mid sized cars (decent automatic transmission, automatic AC, 4 power windows, etc), that's where the favours turn to benefit the Mirage, but sadly that's also where most people will simply upgrade to a cheaper, bigger B-segment car.

I had a B segment car, Ford Fiesta. am so not happy with the fuel economy so I make the turning point to a relatively cheaper and fuel economy car. I came to conclusion after test driving a lot of cars and looking to even Nissan Micra as an option that the Mitsubishi has the best option for the price.

So what are you Canucks gonna offer???????????????

Offer? Well nothing at the moment -- I think the $500 rebate offer already expired. We'll see if they put something else on the table when the car shows up in dealerships soon.

Shopped the Versa against the Mirage.

Big advantage for the Versa was the back seat leg room. Enormous.

Everything else went to the Mirage, in our opinion.

Dressing a Versa up with the Mirage's features made it much more expensive. After all that, you're still stuck witu the Versa's el-cheapo dash.
