Mirage awarded "Lowest Cost of Ownership" in its class in U.S. - Vincentric

The Mirage hatchback has been recognized as having the lowest cost of ownership in the subcompact hatchback class in Vincentric's annual ranking. (Yaris wins for the sedan body style.)

Source (PDF): View 2017 model year vehicles with the Lowest Cost of Ownership in their class

    Cost of ownership factors include:

    • depreciation
    • fees & taxes
    • financing
    • fuel
    • insurance
    • maintenance
    • opportunity cost
    • repairs

Vincentric identified the Best Value in America winners by measuring which vehicles had lower than expected ownership costs given their market segment and price. Over 3,000 vehicle configurations were evaluated in all 50 states plus D.C. using a range of annual mileage intervals and insurance profiles.
This study is similar to previous ones from multiple countries that have singled out the Mirage for its low cost of ownership:

Depends on if they calculated based on percentage of depreciation, or dollar value of depreciation. A $15,000 car can't depreciate more than $15,000, but a $40,000 car sure can.

Agreed. A $12,000 Mirage may depreciate $6,000 in the first two years, but a $50,000 car can depreciate $20,000 in the first two years. And $20,000 is more than $6,000.

Yeah the depreciation is bad, but if you keep it who cares. I traded in my after 2 year and 84k for 6500, so I could of gotten 7800 private party. And indeed the cost to own was amazing. it was less than 15 percent of my net with payment, gas and insurance! Irony is now I own a 2017 Yaris iA, lol

2015-2019 best used car value awards

Related award just announced for the Mirage and G4 by the same organization:

Mitsubishi Mirage And Mirage G4 Honored With 2020 Certified Pre-Owned Value In America By Vincentric

Franklin, Tenn. There’s no better value than a new Mitsubishi Mirage, unless it’s a pre-owned one [...] both the Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4 sedan received the 2020 Vincentric Best CPO Value in AmericaTM awards in the subcompact hatchback and subcompact segments, respectively, at the 7th Annual Vincentric Best CPO Value in America Awards.

Awarded by Vincentric, a provider of ownership and cost data, knowledge, and consumer insights to the automotive industry, the 2020 Vincentric Best CPO Value in AmericaTM awards recognize the vehicles that offer the best value in every market segment over the past five model years (2015-2019), with the assumption of 15,000 miles driven each year. The awards use a statistical analysis comparing total cost-of-ownership figures and the current market price for each vehicle.

By incorporating factors such as finance rates, residual values and maintenance schedules, statistical results determine the awards that are then given to specific makes and model lines after factoring in their overall performance in a variety of cost and ownership areas, including:

    • Purchase price
    • Retained value
    • Fixed and operating costs over the life of the vehicle
    • Maintenance and repair

Both the Mirage and Mirage G4 received top honors among entries from every major automotive manufacturer in their respective classes, as both vehicles offer a strong and appealing combination of attractive purchase price, low overall cost of operation and ownership, and a high value of standard safety and convenience features, resulting in great value for consumers.

The 2020 Mitsubishi Mirage is the most efficient gasoline-powered non-hybrid vehicle available in the U.S.2, featuring a 1.3-liter three-cylinder engine that achieves fantastic fuel economy of up to 37/43/39 mpg city/highway/combined with the optional continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).2 The Mirage G4 saves consumers money at the pump too, offering up to 35/41/37 mpg city/highway/combined, when equipped with the optional CVT.2
(Sharp-eyed readers will note in the above text that American Mirages now apparently come with a larger displacement engine than other regions.)
