Almost $10 per quart. At that price, it'll be a tough sell. Was that picture taken at a WalMart?

Yes. So it will likely be even pricier everywhere else.

I was at Walmart getting oil tonight because it was posted on the Metro Forum that Mobil is running some good rebates right now. They do it once a year. Not a bad time to stock up, but I don't think this particular product is part of the deal. Walmart isn't listed as a 'participating retailer', but everyone over there at GMF says the rebate works just fine on oil bought there. When you buy the 5-quart jugs, the rebate makes them more or less half price. I'd say $14 for five quarts is pretty damned cheap for Mobil 1.

That pricing structure seems a bit odd...

No it's not, it makes sense. Extra cost for more durable product means savings in labor and downtime.

Maybe not for individuals but for businesses it's sensible.

Mobil knows exactly what they're doing on pricing.

I was in Wal-Mart over the weekend and noticed that Mobil-1 Annual Protection is now selling for less than $40...

At this price point I may try it at my next oil change just to see how in compares in an oil analysis.

That's a significant discount from their introductory price of over $50.

I figured Mobil increased the additives to make the oil last. It will be interesting to see the analysis.

It seems the base stock (in conjunction with their filters) is up to the task. That's another reason why I prefer Mobil1 filters.

I am at 10,000 miles on the annual protection oil, so far so good from the eyeball test. I have driven with two passengers and gear from Southern California to Idaho and done a few other trips to Vegas and Zion in the summer. I drive gently until she is warm but after that I do not go easy on her. Plenty of 5k rpm gear shifts and abundant 100 percent throttle use. Couple of redline fuel cuts thrown in as well for what I call the Italian Tune Up.

After 10k miles the oil is showing only a few millimeters lower on the dipstick at most, which I find to be amazing, and it still ''looks good''. I plan to send in a sample to Blackstone at 20,000 miles or when it gets to the low mark on the dipstick, whichever comes first. Under the oil cap the timing chain looks absolutely spotless with no varnish or staining and I have 66K miles on my little red.

I will say the annual protection is not a way to save money, but it is convenient, and I like to experiment with early adopter type stuff.

I'll post the Blackstone results here, although I wish they focused purely on wear per mile than total wear amount.
