    5,000 Mile Oil Analysis

Here is my most recent oil analysis. I had my first analysis done at 1,000 miles when the oil was full of break-in materials (those numbers are shown on the report below). So this is my first "normal" test.

I run Mobil1 Extended Performance 5W30 and change it every 5,000 miles. My car has just over 20,000 miles. Why do I buy extended life oil and then change it every 5,000 miles? The Extended life oil doesn't cost much more...so I figure I'll buy it for the additional additives that it has. Oil changes in this car are cheap...so I like being conservative and just changing it every 5,000 miles. Hey...I'm getting better fuel mileage than 98% of you guys...so don't bust my chops about wasting money on oil changes.

So my aluminum number is the only thing that seems slightly high. I noticed that this member also had a report showing high aluminum.

I'm not hitting the panic button, but as a public service to the Mirage community, I think I will start testing my oil at every 5,000 mile change going forward to see how that aluminum number changes.

Thanks for paying for this analysis and sharing it. If I understand correctly, you paid extra for the TBN analysis, right?

    What filter did you use?

Yes. I think they charge an extra $10 for the TBN test. I really need to just purchase a 6-pack of these tests in advance so I can get them at a lower cost.

I forgot to mention that. I was using a Bosch 3323 Distance Plus oil filter during this interval. My local Wal-Mart used to carry these. But when I was in there over the weekend, all of the Bosch filters were gone! Maybe Wal-Mart stopped carrying them?!? I was kind of bummed.

I'm running a Mobil1 M1-110A filter right now, because that was the best filter they had in stock.

Looks like you could very safely let that oil go A LOT longer between changes? I only note this because I am using Mobil 1 0W-20 AFE at 7500 mile intervals.

I didn't know Blackstone offered discount pricing like this. That would be a good idea if they did.

Thanks. How did you choose Bosch - did you use an oil filter selector at the store? The reason I ask is to get a sense of what all fits, knowing that the factory filter is smaller than what dealers have been replacing it with. Also, why do you prefer Bosch?

    Just wondering.

You can buy a "6-pack" of tests for $22 per test (the standard rate is $28 per test). The TBN check still costs an additional $10 per test...even if you buy a 6-pack.

    ...How did you choose Bosch...
I had read some positive comments about the Bosch filter (maybe not on this site because I couldn't find much here when searching). It's a little larger than the stock filter, and it has anti-drainback and bypass valves. I don't have any particular loyalty to the Bosch filter. Since it appears that Wal-Mart may not be carrying them any more, I will probably stick with the Mobil1 M1-110 filters going forward.

Here's my latest oil analysis. For review, I run Mobil1 Extended Performance 5W30 and change it every 5,000 miles. I use a Mobil M1-110 filter.

I'm doing an analysis every 5,000 for a while just to see some patterns for this engine.

I almost bought Mobil1 "Annual Protection" oil to run it this time...but I just couldn't bring myself to drop $50 on a jug of oil that I was only going to run for 5,000 miles.

So how do we translate the report and put it to good use? I'm thinking of putting a FilterMag if it would help.

    Changes:

    Wear Metals:
    Iron >> from 7 to 15 = Increase
    Copper >> from 0 to 31 = Increase
    Nickel >> from 0 to 1 = Increase
    Tin >> from 0 to 4 = Increase

    Contaminants:
    Sodium >> 3 - 11 = Increase
    Silicon >> 17 - 67 = Increase
    Potassium >> 1 - 11 = Increase

    Additives:
    Calcium >> 978 - 1652 = Increase
    Magnesium >> 686 - 12 = Decrease
    Phosphorus >> 689 - 675 = Increase
    Zinc >> 749 - 772 = Increase
    Barium >> 0 - 20 = Increase
    Molybdenum >> 76 - 624 = Increase

You may be looking at the numbers backwards. These reports can be hard to read at first.

The numbers on the right were from my car's very first oil change at around 1,000 miles. This oil was full of all sorts of break-in materials...which is why the values are all over the place. The numbers on the left are from the latest sample.

Check out THIS link which shows some example analysis reports and their associated explanation.

Generally speaking, I'm looking for these things in an oil analysis:

    1) Is there antifreeze, fuel or water in the oil?
    2) Is there dirt in the oil?
    3) Are there unusual levels of any specific metals in the oil?

Your Aluminum numbers are about the same as mine on a per mile basis but Iron is higher. Probably still breaking in.

Very curious to see the numbers track over time!

    Thanks for posting.

Our engines do seem to produce a bit of aluminum, but they are all aluminum engines so it might not mean anything, and almost none of our engines have worn prematurely. Don't worry about the aluminum at those levels.
