Unacceptable vibration/rattle @ 13,000 km SOLVED: loose exhaust hanger

    Hey all..
My 17 Mirage CVT has slowly worked a new bit into it's repertoire. There is now a very distinct low note resonance/droning vibration that can be heard and felt through the seats and steering.
In certain conditions.. while driving at any speed/w RPM between 1800 and 2100 while accelerating (as when cruise is adding power slowly) the rattle starts and will continue until engine load eases or rpm moves out of this zone.
I've been to dealer and took service tech out for a drive but no resolution in the works. Dealer has fixated on the exhaust resonance issue which Mitsu is aware of while ignoring the vibration and rattle I'm concerned about.
Oh well.. here we go again. 3 or 4 months of forcing dealer to properly diagnose and fix issue while I have to drive "the rattler" and put up with it.

    SOLVED: loose exhaust hanger.

Do you have any photos of your exhaust? I wonder if there are any differences from 2014/2015 to 2017.

no pics but yes there are exhaust changes. The CVT programming is far more aggressive at keeping RPM low than my '14 was also. There were changes to at least one of the motor mounts as well.

The exhaust manifold/forward cat is different between 2014/15 and 2017. 17's have the cat part of the exhaust manifold, 14/15's have the cat separate from the exhaust manifold. Otherwise they look the same rear of that.

Damn, you're saying to replace the catalytic converter you have to remove the exhaust manifold from the engine on the 2017 models?

Yeah. If I remember correctly they looked like a pain to get out on the 17's. They're easy to change on a 15', if the bolts aren't rusted out by then.

I can cut through bolts with my dremel or a die grinder, but removing exhaust manifolds is a pain in the ass if the studs break (and they ALWAYS do). Plus you have to replace the gasket then. And I've never seen an exhaust manifold that was a treat to get at.

Well... Just one more thing I like about my 2015!

I'm guessing you have to deal with rust more often in Ontario than in the west? Every time I see a vehicle with Ontario plates it seems to have a ton of rust. Either that or everyone I saw was owned by lazy people that rarely washed their vehicle(like myself). That can't be fun to work with.

Northern Ontario uses liquid calcium on the roads as well as salt/sand mix so yeah rust is a real issue here.
The liquid calcium becomes airborne (like fog) with traffic and gets in every nook and cranny, even gets sucked into the engine.

Southern Ontario uses plenty of nasty stuff on the roads too. What makes stuff rust through fast down here is the freeze-thaw cycles. This causes the snow to liquefy and water mixed with rust causing chemicals just rots the cars. I've had fasteners that no longer have usable heads to deal with at times because the rot has destroyed the hex head! Ugh! Rust treating my car every year from brand new now.
